Ericasedc: user Sage 5 Rex-121 review (and BBB 15V appearance)

I'm not super plugged in to the online knife community, but when I do watch, a couple of channels I really like are Cedric & Ada and Ericasedc. Both are very driven towards the 'knife afi'/steel nerd/edge performance end of the bell curve of the knife community. As such, tend to feature quite a few Spydercos.

Erica was a self avowed Spyderco hater until she started experiencing more of their performance envelope and now has come to really appreciate them. I find her videos very refreshing, and something unique in the knife community.

She is a huge fan of K390, and this latest video of hers is quite flattering towards this little knife, and is from a real user perspective. As I got about 3/4 through her video, I started thinking 'oh man, someone should probably send her something in 15V to try and, right as I thought it, she whipped out one of the new Para 3 15V LWs lol. Totally awesome.

Anyway, was a fun watch and you may enjoy her no-frills, cut-through-the-bs style. Has a great report on sharpening Rex-121 as well.

Both of these channels put out excellent content.

Ericasedc is a big part of why I started collecting.

And Rex-121 looks awesome. For now, I can't justify it, K390 will have to do for me

I bought a Sage5 in Rex121 and I must say I like it really well so far, I just want the steel in a longer edc. Something like a Police4 with Rex121 would be awesome.
I really like at least a 4" blade for my go to edc knives. Sure I have some smaller that I like just fine.

This girl is a hoot to watch. Only second video I have watched of her.

Hi Red Leader,

Thanx for the input and the link.

I guess she likes REX-121. Crucible really went out on a limb for this and I for one rally appreciate that kind of pushing the envelope.

I've been maintaining a very coarse edge (CBN Gauntlet Vivi style) at 10 DPS with no problems so far.

I like her, I’ve been watching her videos for a few years now and she’s carved a credible little niche for herself. I much prefer her videos to the constant stream of unboxing/desk top talk “reviews” that seem to be ten a penny - I simply can’t watch those any more.

I think Erica and Pete (Cedric and Ada) make the best knife related content now. Long may they last.

Thanks Sal! Wow, 10dps. That it can support that is awesome. I'm glad I picked up a Rex-121 Sage 5, because it is going to force me to elevate my sharpening game, which is somewhere between a 3 and a 5, on a scale of 100 haha.

Also, since it is in the conversation, I'm also really looking forward to Cedric and Ada's 2nd video (ala 1st sharpening update) test of the same knife, as he got 2000 cuts on the factory edge which is both a testament to the knife steel and also the edge that Taichung is putting on these.

Agreed! And I have also really enjoy OUTDOORS55 as well - just a superb talent stack he has with his sharpening skill, use of photography/microscopes, down to earth attitude and witty humor. Awesome signal-to-noise ratio.

Not that I am looking for any confirmation bias, but I do think it is fun when I'm watching some of these and bam, a Spyderco invariably pops up in the video. There is quite a bit of overlap between these knives and folks whose content is driven toward edge performance, and it makes sense.

Ahh yes how could I forget Alex from OUTDOORS55 - his sharpening / edge Maintenance videos are the best there is bar none, although I do like Michael Christy’s old content too (where the **** did that guy go??)

Anyone who needs help or info with sharpening and edge maintenance, I instantly recommend they watch OUTDOORS55.

Hi PMBohol,

I don't think she's a member. I'll shoot her a link to this thread. Maybe she'd be interested in sharing?

I'm glad to see that she picked up that 15V Para 3. I think she maybe mentioned in one of her videos about wanting to try 15V, and I left her a comment about how I would ask to see if the SFO would be willing to sell any of those leftover 15V Mule Teams after the Seconds sale, but I think they keep whatever may be left for next year. So it was cool to see that she somehow got this one, and all the better, since more people will have exposure to a Para 3 LW in 15V than a MT.

To me as one who has really no experience with such superhard steels (I am mostly a VG10 / S30V type of guy) it is fascinating how she literally states that REX 121 was the easiest steel to sharpen for her (starting at roughly eight minutes into the vid).
And it is pretty clear that she totally knows what she´s talking about.

Really refreshing, one of the rare you tube knife "reviewers" who are actually... well, REVIEWERS.
Top three going by pocket-time (update April 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10), Chaparral SE (CTS XHP)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Endela SE (K390)

harder steels burr less. So as long as you are using an abrasive that works well with such hard steels, and aren't reprofiling the edge, harder steels are quite pleasant to work with.

ZDP189 was the steel that made me realize this. Much less burring than spydercos VG10, and a completely different level of burr formation than 420, 440, etc.
May you find peace in this life and the next.

Thanks, Vivi!

I know I´ve been saying this several times already, but perhaps it is really time to give such steels a try myself.
It is just that I am perfectly happy with what I have (especially VG10 in SE and REX45 in PE) and more interested in other knife aspects than "top supersteels" - but to explore something new should be worth it anyway!

The Sage 5 LW is actually a model that really "connects" with me just by its overall design and in a role as a more "urban" EDC. And that I am one of those weirdos who like burnt orange scales might help too.. ;)

Would you say that for a start I´d be fine with just my CBN sharpmaker rods for REX121? (I do have some cheapo coarse diamond plates, but am still far from being a skilled total freehand sharpener).
Also considering that I don´t baby my knives at all, so some chips and stuff might have to get repaired?

Perhaps someone could write in the comments below the vid that she might want to check her mails? (I for example do not really frequently with mine).

I like her, I’ve been a subscriber since cedric and ada gear shouted her out (so like 2 or 3 years ish). I’ve seen her tastes grow and change (from the days when magna-cut first arrived on the scene), what I find really cool about her love for steel is that she arrived at her conclusions kind of organically through use and viewer suggestions and long term testing through use, rather than the usual knife and steel AFI way which is to read about something get hyped, then try it. Her and Pete loving the steel is a huge endorsement as I’ve only heard nightmares about it until now.
