What's the one you keep going back to?

#1

Post by JayHenMac »

Over the last couple of years my collection has grown. Traditional folders, SAKs, modern folders, and fixed blades. I have some safe queens, but for the most part I'd like to think that I do a decent job of rotating them out. That is until my son was working on something and asked to borrow my pocket knife. I handed him the Sage 5 I was carrying that day and he said "No, not that one, the one you always carry." I thought about it and realized that I pretty much always go back to carrying my Endela. I used to think it was the Native that I reached for most often, but that's probably because it's the one I've had the longest, and it was the first Spydie I owned. But if I'm being honest with myself, my SE Endela is what I keep going back to.

What is it for you?

... But if I'm being honest with myself, my SE Endela is what I keep going back to.

Funny you´d say that - actually when I don´t know or don´t think about what to carry and am also not in a "honeymoon-phase" where I absolutely want to carry and try out a new knife in all possible tasks (like currently with the Chap SE:
...Then the VG10 Endela SE is the knife I grab in a majority of cases.

It actually could be my favorite Spydie overall, if it just had a longer, more handle filling blade and thus more cutting edge (whenever I muse about or propose an Endela "mediterranean" Salt I also hope they would give it that longer blade).

Great ergos with nicely chamfered FRN, a very roomy handle plus a ricasso to choke up on, solidly built with liners but still really light, supernice not too long carry and that amazing serrations... a lot to like here indeed!
Top three going by pocket-time (update April 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10), Chaparral SE (CTS XHP)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Endela SE (K390)

Oddly enough, for the past couple of years, my VG10 SE Endela has often become my go-to when I can't really figure out exactly which knife I want to carry for a given day.

Same here.
It is not "flashy", but just that good and a true no nonsense does-it-all workhorse with its perfect type of serrations.

There seems to be a trend so far!

I am curious to see some of the other old standby choices.

Though the Manix is my favorite Spyderco knife, my DLT Cruwear Delica exclusive is my go to knife. Small footprint in the pocket, solid ergos, great thin and slicey blade (mine reprofiled to 12 DPS) and the Olive Drab Green scales with TiCN blade is quite the looker of a color combo as well. I've also come to love the back lock as my favorite lock as well. I just realized the other day, I only have 1 knife left with the compression lock (Shaman)

For the past five years it was the Pacific 2 SE H1, but nowadays I’ve been defaulting to my SE Chaparral (partially due to local length limits here in Greenville, SC, but mostly because it’s such a joy to use).

When I head back to California in a few months, I’ll probably start defaulting to my newly-acquired Native Chief. I’ll still bring the Chaparral everywhere, too. 😂

The Delica for me. Always come back to it. Although the Endura has been getting some pocket time lately

Bodacious, it'll never go back in the box.

Ayoob Cruwear, this is another one I've yet to put away since getting, even though I don't carry it as much as others it stays on my desk at home.

Autonomy 1 and 2, these two are among my very favorite designs and if I only owned these two knives I think I'd be fine.

It’s extremely rare that either the Native 5 in Magnacut or the Bodacious isn’t in my pocket. I usually go with a large and small knife carry so I’ll rotate either of the two.

Some form of Military. Lately a Military 2 S110V with Rockscale titanium scales, but I like the OG Military Model just as much.

Edited to say the Military probably isn't even my favorite. That would be the Stretch 2 XL. But for some reason the Military is the one I carry more often. :thinking

My go to is the Byrd Raven 2. I have several others with flashier steels and more exotic handle materials, but when the work gloves come on this is the tool that is in my pocket. Many other knives are arguably "better", but for some reason I feel completely comfortable thrashing on it. Unfortunately, my Raven 2 finds staples and nails somewhat frequently, but it just keeps working. This CTS-BD1 blade resists chipping really well and is super tough. It seems to roll and bend before it chips out. Also, the steel is easy to sharpen and get it back in action quickly. Was able to find this one for a very good price, and it just feels so good to use hard. The deployment on the Teflon washers is buttery smooth and the liner lock is strong and reliable. The black G10 scales feel great and have held up very well to hard use even in slippery conditions. Just love this knife. Maybe one of these days I'll grow a pair and start using one of my PM2s, Caribbean or Swayback for the tough stuff, but for now I'll keep reaching for the Raven and nothing more.

I always gravitated to the Native family over the Delica/Endura family. For years the Native lived in my pocket. It's interesting how that changed and I didn't even realize it until my son found it odd that I was carrying something other than my Endela.

It's funny how the ones we end up carrying the most might not even be our favorite.

Still the Native 5 for me. 2024 was the first time I handled a Native Chief, and I'm interested to see if it will have the staying power of the Native 5. It feels like it will, but only time will tell.

Next model I'm trying for the first time is the Sage 5. So far I've never kept a compression lock in my collection, but the Sage does look a lot like a Native family knife, so I'm interested to see if it clicks more than the Military line.

Historically it’s been the SE Dragonfly in H1. Just got a k390 Wharncliffe D’fly to see if the H1 can be ousted from my pocket/waistband.
