Still waiting for my Catcherman - due to an issue (??) with the model no one ever mentioned here (two questions)

#1

Post by Wartstein »

Ordered a Catcherman from "Coutellerie Tourangelle" last May (to be clear: They are a good and reliable dealer and offered perfect service and a refund also in this case).

To this day I still have not received the knife.
When I asked them "why" end of May 24 already they replied (they are French, so their English is not perfect):

-"Actually C17 [Catcherman] that we have in stock cannot be sold the blade chips on tubing.
We are waiting a last shipment from Spyderco with somes C17 that do not have this trouble."

(see also here viewtopic.php?p=1784052#p1784052)

The reply to my last request so far in Sept 24:

-"Sorry about the delay.
Spyderco told us since many month they have some for us on hand but each delivery we still not get these...
Please sent to my direct email for an immediat refund."

Two questions (more out of interest than anything else. I don´t absolutely need a Catcherman and they´d send me a refund whenever I request it)

1.) Anyone ever heard of or experienced issues with the Catcherman concerning that the blade would hit the ( I guess?) lanyard tube? And even chip from doing so?

2.) Can it really be that Spyderco still has Catcherman sprints (without that "issue" (?)) or will produce some more and deliver those to that dealer at this point in time?

Addition: I don't think that the Catcherman even HAS a lanyard tube (?).. if so, what could they possibly mean with "blade chips on tubing"?

Hey Gernot,

For the record, I've also got my Catcherman from CT around the same timeframe you ordered yours (and yes, they are great to deal with). No issues with mine, either with blade chipping on cutting, or on the blade hitting anything during the closing motion.

While I don't necessarily understand the issue described, the delay you've experienced seems to be caused by Spyderco themselves - at some point they seem to have offered to send another Catcherman to this particular dealer but that did not happen so far (and I'd see slim chances of that, my guess would be the entire lot is sold out by now) - or at least that's how I read their message.

In your shoes, I'd take the refund but also drop Xavier a note that if they ever do receive a new functional example of the Catcherman, they might notify you first? That way you'll no longer keep your cash tied up in a product that might never show up, but still be in pole position to buy it if/when available.

That's frustrating and just a little bit of an odd response from them.

I've just had a look at one of mine and I can confirm the following:
  • There isn't a lanyard tube, although there is a slight rise to accommodate the moulded lanyard hole
  • There is plenty of clearance (ie several mm) between the last few cm of the blade and the highest point of the handle
  • I have zero chipping or rolling

I have 3 Catchermans including the new Sprint Run, and older AUS-8, and an MBS-26. All function the same and I have never noticed any problems with them. I am kinda confused by their explanation as it doesn't make much sense. Id get a refund and buy one off Ebay or something. I wouldn't hold out for that.

Gernot , I seriously doubt the dealer will get this Sprint in the future . I would pull the plug and get a refund or a store credit ? I checked dealers in States and only found one at a higher price and they not do international shipping. Basically the ship has sailed , unless as suggested you want to go secondary market . Dan

no issues with my catcherman chipping or anything related to the build quality.

hope you can get your hands on one. they're awesome. super light for the size, and very nice cutting ability. I'll be carrying mine again this spring and summer for sure.
May you find peace in this life and the next.

Hi Gernot,

If they are a French dealer, they are probably getting their product from our French distributor. I would have to do some investigation to verify that, but that would e my guess?

Thanks to all who posted here! Very much appreciate your inputs and help!

@sal : Thanks a lot for chiming in!

I have no idea how Spyderco products in various European countries get to online dealers - but if you say so, then most likely there is some distributor involved.. ?

It is just strange that this should be the only dealer who got a Catcherman batch where "the blade chips on tubing", whatever that might exactly mean. And as others have pointed out: The Catcherman should be a model where blade chipping while the knife gets closed is very unlikely just by its overall construction?

At first I thought they might confound the Catcherman with the Cruwear Stretch XL (which apparently had that issue with some pieces?).
But then they explicitly confirmed "Catcherman" once more and with the correct model number C17...

I think I´ll contact Coutellerie Tourangelle one last time and if they still don´t have any news go for the refund....

Hi, Gernot:
I'm doing some research on our side. I'll let you know what I find out as soon as I can.

Agreed 100%! This is just awesome indeed!

@TazKristi , @sal - thanks a lot!

But to be clear: It was not my intention at all to bring anyone to do "research", let alone to "complain" by any means (both concerning Coutellerie Tourangelle or Spyderco!)
As said, this was more out of curiosity cause I found it interesting that/how a Catcherman could have that alleged "issue" and if it really could be that Spyderco would still deliver that model to dealers.

And it is important to me to say again: I had only good experiences with Coutellerie Tourangelle, there might be just a misunderstanding on their side? Perhaps right because English is not their mothertongue too?

Wartstein, good to chat with you!

I am in Illinois, USA. I order quite a few knives, many of them are preorders. I have a budget and cannot allow my credit cards to be run up.

I'll preorder many knives and wait to try to get a knife, and if the preorder does not come in say 90 days, but another Spyderco release happens and I want it, I cancel the preorder and buy the new release.

I don't know how many times I've done this. But I do buy a knife! I get a knife but it's not the preorder knife picked out. Then I go back to the preorder and see if I still want it, can afford it, and go back on the preorder list again.

:winking-tongue

That is why I have too many knives! I cannot wait patiently. The knife stores are making a mint off of me.

They indeed do, even if I wonder if they sometimes find another way to get your products, like Blade Show and stuff like that. I've seen Mules and Factory Seconds this year, I was really surprised.

The blade chipping on the lanyard tubing was a big issue with the Cruwear G10 Stretch XL. They must have got their models mixed up for some reason.

This is what I thought at first too (and mentioned in my reply to Sal in this very thread).
But I asked them explicitly if they might confound Catcherman and Cruwear Stretch XL, and they confirmed that the "chipping issue" they meant happened with some Catchermans (they even gave the right model number, C17)

Now I also recall a post in the first thread I started about this, where @Bob Janvier stated that he called Coutellerie Tourangelle and they (quote) "explained to me that it seems that some Catchermans (maybe 2 units or more) had chip on the tip of the blade when closing the knife.
It could be the blade hitting the FRN handle when closing but he was not absolutely affirmative.
Spyderco is informed about the problem."
(see here viewtopic.php?p=1785093#p1785093).

To me just interesting that apparently there actually was/is an issue with some (very few?) Catchermans indeed (?... and Spyderco was aware of this ?), but no one else ever noticed - or had a problem with that...
