I think by kicking up a fuss I meant getting yourself in a tizzy or overly worrying. In other words, I don't think there's any reason to worry because of what they told you.SpydieCollector wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 12:33 pmI hadn't realised I was kicking up a fuss. I'm simply explaining my issue and looking for advice.
My reason for posting is that I own a number of Spyderco knives and am aware of counterfeits getting into the food chain by unscrupulous customers retuning a clone or old used knife in place of the genuine new item they received.
Also this knife arrived in a dirty box with a dirty foam liner and no paperwork.
I thought it may be an older version and I was kind of ok with that but when I compared it to my Endura 4 I bought in 2017 the blade stamps were different, and I was especially concerned about the inner moulding being noticeably different at the bottom. (As per the photo above)
I did ask HH customer service to confirm it was a genuine Spyderco but they just told me to send it back or keep it with a discount.
After reading the replies I'm happy to believe its a genuine Spyderco, albeit a 20 years old model, although not what I expected when ordering.
The price I paid was around £105 and Haines offered a £35 credit against my next purchase if I kept the knife. I'm a bit rough with my knives doing bushcraft and outdoor activities and I don't fancy that back spring giving out while a new Endura will give me more faith in it. I'll send it back and look for a new one.
Thanks to all for the replies. It's helped.

Re: Dodgy knife received from Heinnie Haynes. Advice sought.
I did pack it up to send it back but I think it deserves a new home for Christmas since its been unloved for 20 years, and it has got a lot of praise in these comments. Members seeing it as a vintage knife and not just an old knacker has changed my mind.
I told HH I'd keep the knife and they gave a £35 refund. It's not exactly what I ordered or expected but I think it's worked out fair enough with the discount.
I think I'll buy another knife.

That seems like a reasonable deal. Having an old knife in new condition is pretty cool.SpydieCollector wrote: ↑Thu Dec 19, 2024 7:44 amI told HH I'd keep the knife and they gave a £35 refund. It's not exactly what I ordered or expected but I think it's worked out fair enough with the discount.

Seemed fair in the end. And with the £35 credit I just ordered a new Endurer 4 off HH for about £67 with free delivery. Maybe they'll send another old knife and offer a big discount to keep it and I can use that discount to order another Endurer and repeat ad infinitumRustyIron wrote: ↑Thu Dec 19, 2024 8:37 amThat seems like a reasonable deal. Glad this came to a good resolution! I haven't ordered from HH, but have always heard they're solid.
I'm unsurprisingly also a fan of vintage knives so I'll echo that owning a first run E4 is pretty cool. I'm not sure precisely what else is different relative to later runs, but I do love the old school tang stamps.

I've gone all weird over this knife now. I keep wondering what's its been doing sat in stock for 20 years moved from pilar to post and untouched by human hands while its box gets decrepit around it. I think its got character. It is in unused condition despite the crappy box and innards. I'm liking it more and more. And with the credit refund and the HH rewards points I used to buy it, it cost me about £60 all in inc delivery. I also like the deeper blade stamping now I know its a gen Endura and not a clone some idiot sent back as a return and kept the HH blade. Bit of a waffle but it made sense to me at the time.

The C95 Manix is one of my favorite spydies of all time. Definitely a top 3, maybe my #1 design to use.SpydieCollector wrote: ↑Thu Dec 19, 2024 11:38 amI've gone all weird over this knife now. One day I was browsing New Graham and saw an old sprint version of it brand new in box. They were only made in 2008 so it was around 15 years old when I scooped it up.
I also wondered why it had sat in a box all that time. I figure a collector originally bought it.
I've used it many times since then and it works great. Use that vintage Endura with confidence!

Well, looks like it all worked out in the end. It is indeed cool to own a first generation Endura 4 from 2005. As with other comments, I too think there would be absolutely nothing wrong with the backsprings. My Foliage Green E4 from that era is perfectly fine.SpydieCollector wrote: ↑Thu Dec 19, 2024 11:38 amI've gone all weird over this knife now. As for the grey box, actually it’s in “not bad” condition considering it had probably been in their stock for almost 20 years, haha. But I expect the piece of foam liner inside would have started the process of disintegration. I know all of mine from that era has done so, a natural process of PU over time.
So, enjoy your “new old stock” E4. And who knows, this may start you going on a hunt for more grey box Spydies!

C95 Manix is a gorgeous knife. I love Spyderco knives. I've got other brands, a box of all kinds of knives but I settled on Spydie years ago because they're slim, light, solid, and have a great one hand opening.vivi wrote: ↑Thu Dec 19, 2024 1:03 pmThe C95 Manix is one of my favorite spydies of all time. I've also got into UKPK knives for legal carry in England. My current EDC knife is a Byrd Tern which is still a Spydie in my opinion lol:

You're so right. I went from "Oh my gosh I just spent a hundred quid on an old knacker in a box falling apart!" to "Awwww this knife has been neglected for 20 years and needs someone to love it!" - Well, after reading all these comments at least. And it is in nice condition, no rust spots, smooth opening, clean handles.sv4 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 19, 2024 11:11 pmWell, looks like it all worked out in the end. The box foam is a bit grubby but intact, a bit like the box in general. My first 'old timer' knife! Yee hahhh!
I've got another order from HH coming today - another Endura 4. And if it turns up old-new again, instead of just 'new' I'll be quite happy about it now. I'd still want a big discount mind haha!
Some 'old timer' Endura 4 knife photos:
Re: Dodgy knife received from Heinnie Haynes. Advice sought.
This just reminded me of the time I bought a Sebenza from an online dealer and it arrived obviously second-hand ~ Light swirls on the steel and some faint marks on the Mammoth Ivory and titanium. Granted, it was very minor wear but imagine my surprise on seeing that because I thought it was brand new knife from an official dealer.
We had a fair amount of to and fro before getting everything settled (They agreed to cover the cost of it going back to CRK for a refurb which I thought was a fantastic, fair result).
The shop had been selling second-hand knives for a period of time with no mention of it in the description. They were just put online alongside the new ones. After my purchase, they changed the descriptions to mention where a knife was second-hand, even if it was unused.
Heinnie Haynes seem to have done the right thing here and their offers seem fair and generous. Hopefully they'll put all necessary details in the description, if they haven't already sorted that out. I had to return two knives to them, and it was easy to do and quickly refunded. No ties or links to them, but I liked to think of HH as a very good, dependable, company to deal with.

They gave me every viable option - refund/ replacement/ keep for £35 store credit. I've no idea how they got my order mixed up, but I've got another order with them due for delivery today, so who knows what will turn up. I'm hoping for a Delica 25th Anniversary. I ordered an Endura 4Roefisher wrote: ↑Fri Dec 20, 2024 7:13 am
