Might be a good way to print high performance steel on to blanks so you have the good stuff only where the edge would be? I wonder if diamond powder or boron nitrides could be added.

I think @SpyderEdgeForever may have brought up the printing of knives 6 to 12 months ago in OffTopic.

This may be good if it advances the US Military, space travel, or even the manufacture of knives. They may come up with a material that has better performance if produced this way. Navy and NASA can use this technology right now.

Printing a San Mai blank that is 90% to size and then forging may have benefits in performance and ease of manufacture
