Does anyone here know when?

Post by SteveMidwest »

Hello all,

Does anyone here know when Spyderco started adding these small round stickers to the inside of their boxes?
A friend of mine and I were having a discussion about it this morning. I have a box with the 52100 DLC Manix 2 in it, and he was wondering where the included sticker was for it. I said, after looking at the label, that this is a KQ knife (November 2017), and I don't think they were including a sticker back then.

I told him, that if I had to guess when it was, I would say sometime around 2018 or 2019. A quick search here in the forum, mentions it happening sometime around 2022. Does anyone know for sure? :thinking

What say you?

It was early 2021 that they started including the stickers inside the boxes. Difficult to pinpoint the exact moment they started but the stickers were first documented here on the forum in early 2021 - around March/April.

Spyderco made a special coin for military and service members around 2012 but they may have began making those earlier than that. Those military coins were never sold, only given to military personnel.

The SpyderCoin, that they still produce today, was started in 2015.

Spyderco makes a couple other coins as well but they are not currently for sale, only given away.

I don't know when it started, but I got my Endura late 2022 and it had a sticker. Mine lives on the peg board in front of my computer's desk. :grin-big eyes

Hi MK-211,

Talkin' Story - Challenge coins;

Spyyderco began making "Challenge Coins" a decade plus ago. The original coins were made to show support for Law Enforcement and Military. Both Military and Law Enforcement were beginning to get a bad rap for a variety of mostly political reasons. There may be a small percentage of Cops and Soldiers that are not honorable, but the trend was to paint them all with a broad brush as being bad. We felt that we wanted to do something to show our support for the very many dedicated Military and Law Enforcement officers doing a good job. The early coins were smaller and I kept making them larger and larger until I was satisfied they were easily read. The wording hasn't changed, only the size and colors.

One side of the "Cop" coins says; "It is the responsibility of good to stop evil from hurting the innocent", around the outside. In the center, it says; "Support Our Military & Law Enforcement".

The other side says; Never Give Up Never Back Up Never Back Down around the outside. In the Center, it has our "bug" and says; Spyderco, Golden, Colorado U.S.A. Earth and the date made. Currently 2024.

The second Challenge coin is made for Fire Fighters and First Responders. On side one, around the outside, it says; "Thank you to the brave men and women who fight the beast every day". In the center, it has the "Fire Dragon" and says "Support our Fire Fighters & First Responders".

The other side says, around the outside, says "Serving Those Who Bravely Serve Us All". "Golden, Colorado USA Earth". In the center there are crossed Axes, A Spyderco bug, "Since 1976" Spyderco and the date, which is currently 2024.

Twice a month, our assistant, Wendy, contacts a Police station somewhere in the US, she find out the number of officers working working an she sends that many coins to the station. Twice a month, on the odd weeks, she selects a fire house in the US, and does the same and send that many coins to the Fire house.

The above two coins are available for sale. I think they're $14.95 each.

The third coin on Side one says: Patriot Sunrise 2022 Spyderco and the Spyderco bug. Side two has the pledge of allegiance to the United States...The third coin I have been giving away to Patriots that I meet. They have not been for sale.

As an aside, Gail and I have another company that we launched 20+ year ago, "HappyThoughts.com". We saved the website and kept it relatively dormant for 20+ years, but we are in the process of re-structuring the Website where we will be marketing Some jewelry (Totems, etc.) Happy Thoughts cups, and "Challenge coins", which will have the "Happy Brain on one side and "sayings" on side two. These are "sayings" that we have found along our path or created ourselves. An example of one of the sayings is; "A goal in life is to be consistent like the sun and transparent like the air. That's how trust is built....and trust is the true bottom line"' (Coin #1).

We have inventory on 9 coins with another 10 or so in-the-works. We plan to have the HappyThoughts.com website up and operating early next year.

I don't know the answer to your question, but feel compelled to chime in anyway. I think the stickers are way cool, and I like getting them with my new knives. And they're NICE stickers, not some junk that will just fall off in a couple months. Apple used to provide nice stickers with their products, but recently discontinued the practice. I'm disappointed. Spyderco, don't be like Apple.

I should have also asked earlier, but I forgot to until now.

When did the small cards start to be included in the Spyderco boxes, that have a knife in them with a non-stainless steel blade? :thinking

Noting that extra care should be taken, to prevent rust. I forget the exact wording on the card.

That card is also not present in the Manix 2 52100 Date Code KQ (November 2017) knife box. So it must also be sometime after that.

Hi RustyIron,

We try to everything we do to a high quality standard. We usually don't follow what other companies do. We create our own path.

I agree! The stickers are a small but VERY NICE touch. Thank you @sal for including the stickers. My last Apple product, my 2019 Macbook Pro, was bought secondhand so I really have no idea if they discontinued the Apple stickers, but I remember getting them with my previous Macbooks.

These small touches really makes for an amazing customer experience.

I agree. Who doesn't like stickers?

As an aside, I recently bought a knife from one of the mid-tier Chinese brands. I bought it brand new, directly from the manufacturer website. Now this was a $90 knife (not expensive, but definitely not cheap either) and when it finally arrived I was crestfallen to discover that there was no sticker in the package. Granted, it came with one of the zip up taco-style storage cases. But I was disappointed when there was no sticker. It's a small thing, and ultimately totally inconsequential in the grand scheme. But it's the little things like that make customers feel that these companies appreciate our business.

Thank you @sal for doing all the little things well too. It means a lot.
