@Makunochimaster I'm not a godly person, but I know you're in the Ukraine...I've worried about your well being these past few years. But to hear this news, I really wish you the best. I can't imagine being in your shoes right now. I fear for your safety Mak, please update us as your time permits.

Re: Tell us about yourself!
Me, I'm a young adult that has been obsessed with blades for the past 5 years. When I was very young I loved planes, then when I reached the point of not being able to learn anything more practical about them I got interested in cars because I could actually work on them and experience them on a regular basis. Then as my interest in sports cars waned, largely because I realized I would probably never have a reason to own one, I got into researching guns and starting getting an education to be a gunsmith. Unfortunately life circumstances got in the way and I've had to basically put my education on hold. To fill the void that gunsmithing had been occupying, I got into knives, which were cheaper to make a hobby out of than guns could have been.
I have been entirely homeschooled and being homeschooled I had the opportunity to explore all sorts of subjects that you wouldn't have time for in public school. I also learned more from day to day stuff than many have the opportunity to. I have learned to do a plethora of things, everything from cooking to swapping our van's steering rack. I learned how to replace a toilette, how to break down a 80 year old pine that fell in our yard, and how to fix all sorts of broken irrigation, just to name a few things.
I probably tend to have too many hobbies. But that said I still manage to be at least little good at some of them. I've tried writing, but I am not sure I have the temperament or natural instinct for it. Maybe one day something I write will be worth reading. In the realm of music I have a little more worth offering. Between me and my older brother we have written over 60 lyrical songs and we often collaborate on our music. We actually managed to record a small album ourselves doing our own version of some songs in a book series we enjoyed called The Green Ember. I have done some artwork for one of our big dreams, to make a video game. My older brother has made an up and coming indie game engine called Bones and is one of the primary developers of a Duck Game clone called Jumpy, in collaboration with another studio. I hope the game will be getting to a nice playable state soon. I have recently started another game on top of Bones with my younger brother simply called Striker Ball. It is a clone of a Mario Party mini game called Shell Soccer. I really hope to make a farming/turn based strategy game one day.

I live in the southern US where it's rare to see snow. Though I did spend a couple decades in the great lakes region, and miss snowy hikes tremendously.
Aside from knives I also enjoy cooking, camping, hiking, cycling, video games, disc golf, working out etc.
When it comes to games I like rogues and metroidvanias the most, and I have a soft spot for the late 90's and early 2000's. Like JD and his golden era of spyderco, I consider that to be the golden era of gaming. From about 1994-2004 there was so much creativity, and the decades that followed things became too homogenous and cinematic for my taste. Some of my favorites are Diablo 2, Zelda, Super Metroid, Metroid Prime, Morrowind, Quake 2, Unreal Tournament, No Man's Sky, Nethack, Axiom Verge, etc.
I used to be all about cross country bicycle touring, and voluntarily went car free for a few years despite a 20 mile one way commute most that time. Unfortunately cars and bikes don't mix well in the US with our road layouts, so I decided to go back to driving. Bike Tours have taken a back seat to being a dad, but I'm hoping to squeeze a short week trip into 2025.
Speaking of driving, I have never bought an automatic car. Definitely limits my selection when shopping, but I strongly prefer manuals.

Hey all!
I don't like to get too specific with my job/work details online, but I am in the business of helping deliver various earned benefits to the men and women that have selflessly served our nation in the Armed Forces.
I was born and raised not too far outside of Denver, but I moved to the Southeast USA in 2014. I'm married to a USAF Veteran who grew up in the same town that I did. We have one "child" in our 11-year-old doggo - he is a mutt but mostly American Bulldog and American Pit Bull Terrier.
Outside of knives, my hobbies include baking, cooking, knitting, crochet, sewing, listening to music, hockey (go Avs go), cars (mainly watching Formula Drift and working on the projects we have in the garage), firearms, video games, and the furry fandom. I do a little bit of everything lmao.
My husband and I are kind of homebodies, but we go to Blade Atlanta every year and we stop at the Spyderco Factory Store every time we visit our home state!

I am well, a nurse. I worked in critical care for 6 years then transferred to interventional radiology. I enjoy that position since we do many different procedures using radiology technology.
I got into firearms first, especially Ruger, but since they are expensive and I have a family of 5 to feed knives are a *slightly* cheaper hobby.

@rusty that Pivot is fire. How long does the battery last on that one?
I used to ride MTBs (started with 26", moved up to 27.5") until I involuntarily quit a few years ago when the wife and I started trying to have a family. My last ride was a Giant Anthem.

Thanks, man. The Pivot Shuttle AM is by far the best bike I've ever had. It carves inside everything I've had before, soaks up big chunk, holds its line, and loves to jump. Since I rolled up on this one, three other friends have dumped their old rides and picked up AM's. But to answer your question, I figure 30 miles and 6000 feet is the sensible limit. Of course there are plenty of variables that can affect that.
Yesterday I rode with a buddy from the olden days. Back then we were on 26" 3x9 cross country bikes with skinny tires, narrow bars, and fixed seatposts. He was on an Anthem for a while. We were marveling about how we were even able to ride back then. Modern technology has really changed things for the better. When the kids grow up, the wife wants you out from underfoot, and you get another mountain bike, you'll see what I'm talking about.
Good thing you had the knife to chop up that inner tube. You'd look pretty silly out there with a whole tube flopping off the end of your leg!
Re: Tell us about yourself!
6000 ft of gain is nothing to scoff at. Seriously these modern bikes can do it all.RustyIron wrote: ↑Mon Dec 02, 2024 10:14 pm

I started riding on 26 hardtails with no front suspension too back in the 90s, with those twisty dial shifters that sometimes skipped a gear or so. But I really went into "real" mountain biking after getting a job, and I agree, the modern techs we have right now makes riding a bit easier, though some of my buddies might argue it took the "fun" out of trails, but as you grow older you learn to appreciate anything that will make your enjoyment a bit easier on the knees and body.
I'm not that old yet (I'm just in my early 40s), but I used to ride tubed up, old school style. None of that tubeless stuff for me. I just find the whole thing messy and too much of a hassle. Good thing I had an extra set of tubes in this ride; as an XC guy I ride with clipless XC shoes and the extreme mud really blew off the hard sole on this pair - that spare tube (and N5, my only copy of the knife) saved the day and my ride too.

Re: Tell us about yourself!
Me neither! I'm only 61, but a couple guys in my crew are in their mid-60's. They're still strong and talented.
Do the kids ride? It makes me happy to see the youngsters on the trails, whether they're just on fire roads, or on the elite-level trails. It always worries me, though, because you know that if they keep at the sport, they'll eventually need doctors and bandages. I haven't quite figured out the best ratio for risk and fun. Maybe by the time I get old I'll have it figured out.

My name is Rick. I'm currently 63 years old and semi-retired. I spent 33 years working for a large manufacturer of beverage equipment whose equipment is often seen in restaurants and convenience stores. Some of you might have one of their home model coffee brewers in your own home.
I retired from there in October, 2023 and I currently work part time for a dental laboratory delivering dental prosthetics to dentist offices within a 110-mile radius of my home.
I served in the U.S. Army from 1979-1982. Spent most of my enlistment at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. I lived in a mobile home off base with a friend and I had a small knife collection back then too. The trailer caught fire one night and we were not able to put it out. Lost everything I owned including my knives.
I'm a long-time fan of the progressive rock group, Rush. Saw them in concert here in town in 1976 on my 15th birthday and they have been a part of my life ever since. I used to count how many times I've seen them in concert but I lost track at 22 times.
I am currently married to my first and only wife of 20 years. I didn't find the right girl until I was 43 years old.
I see some bicycles posted above. I bought this Specialized Crossroads in 1999 or maybe 2000 and I still ride it today for exercise. We have several trails around here that were converted from railroad tracks into bike trails. Gotta keep those arteries flowing.
I like all kinds of folding knives but I'm not much into fixed blades.

I was at Bragg in '79, as well. (I think they've renamed it to be politically correct, but I don't remember to what).Switchback wrote: ↑Fri Dec 06, 2024 2:24 pmMy name is Rick.
