Titanium mule
Titanium mule
I was wondering if anyone had interest in a titanium alloy mule. As a backpacker, gear weight is a big consideration; that is why cookware and utensils are made out of titanium. Titanium is corrosion resistant and not affected by saltwater. It has been used for diving knives in the past per Wikipedia. I know it is something I’d be interested in. Titanium is an expensive material and I don’t know at all what kind of cutting ability or edge retention properties titanium has, but I thought smarter minds out in the forum would know.
Thanks for your consideration.

Re: Titanium mule
I have a few "Mission" titanium knives supposedly made using a "Beta" titanium alloy that rc's out in the mid to upper 40's. I haven't tested them for hardness. Mission also made knives using A2 steel and to be honest I like the way they perform better than I do the Titanium.
That doesn't mean I don't want a Ti mule. I'd probably buy one if there was one released. I would think we would be given more information about what we were getting if Spyderco made them. I can understand why you would want one John Galt.

Hi JohnGalt,
Welcome to our forum.
We've tested a number of Titanium alloys and haven't found anything that gives us the performance we like.

Thanks for the responses. Who knows what new titanium alloys will be developed in the future; I hope something interesting will present itself. Thanks for the interest.
Sal, I appreciate your response. I enjoy your input to the forum.

One of my ceramic Mules lives in my day pack. It's incredibly lightweight with a paracord wrapped handle.
Re: Titanium mule
Yes it's just in the ceramic mule specific kydex sheath they offered when released. I've thought about making a lighter weight one but haven't got around to it yet.

Re: Titanium mule
I actually started making a Mule blank out of .080” grade 5 Titanium a couple of months ago but never followed through on grinding my bevels and carbidizing it. Later when I head out to my shop I’ll see if I can find it and snap a picture, not that it’s too interesting lol. If I ever get around to finishing it I’ll definitely post it here.
