I got in line for the sale at about 9:15 am. The end of the line was and still is around the corner of the building and at the loading dock on the west side. It’s 10:30 and the line hasn’t grown and I’m at the corner. It’s moving faster. 👍

Hi Meadowlark,

We began the 2nd's Sale in the '80's, back in our location, 2 before the current location. It's just evolved and refined over the years. The crew has also improved it over the years to provide an enjoyable experience and an opportunity to get "not quite perfect" Spyderco's at relatively inexpensive prices. It started out as a "gift" to the local community, and grew from there. We also have one specifically for the "Save & Serve" community (Military, law enforcement, fire fighters, first responders, etc).

Did the engraving begin this year?
Hi Meadowlark,

The engraving began years ago. First, one for the first i line, then it grew from there.

Thanks for sharing the pictures, that looks amazing!

Would love to make it to a seconds sale in person sometime but kind of afraid of what it would do to my finances 😆

They have done similar things in the past. I believe the Cruwear Stretch XLs in the prize bags a year or two ago were signed/engraved by Sal.

Fairly sure it was a Military 2 last year.

Anyone have some pics of their loot from this year?

I’d like to say thanks to Sal and the crew at Spyderco for having the sale year after year.

I ended up getting in line at about the same place as last year and it was far quicker getting in to the tables this year. Well done! 👍

2024 PICS

Me & @Ed Schempp...

Image

...he graciously engraved my Rock Salt this year, on one side it says 'We cook and we cut things', he must've caught my mad moment of gleefully heating up the chili for the Friday feed :winking-tongue

Image

The haul for this year plus the engraved Rock Salt, it's so easy to go over budget... :zany

After Action Report:

This was my very first Spyderco Seconds sale. I never knew about it before, but thanks to visiting the website, was made aware of it a week before. Big shout out to Derrick + Nathan, Zen, Nick and Trevor for being so inviting and cool to hang with.

I came with my 13 yo son who has fast become a Spyderco nut. He got a PM3 for his b-day this year. My only Spyderco is a 10+ year old modified wave Endura, and I told myself if I didn't lose it after 10 years, I'd get a new one. This became the perfect opportunity.

We arrived Friday evening. The weather was in the mid-40s overnight I believe, and we both 'camped under the stars' w/ sleeping bags. Most people had trucks or tents, and some good setups for food and whatnot.

In the morning, the line started forming up around 8:30am.

Image
My line-mates’ knives and mine

We put our stuff away and they actually started moving people through the door at 8:45am or so, and led us down the hall to the entrance of the large conference area.

Image

Once we were let in, the room opened up in to 4 squares of tables, with a LOT to look at. Some brief takeaways:

- I saw lots of Maxamet, both in PM3 versions, and others - we are talking full trays
- Some trays were mixed and quite varied, others had just one knife time in the entire tray
- I didn't see any 15V folders at all, and I wasn't the only one looking. Maybe there were some, and I completely missed them. My son ended up finding the small stash of 15V Mule Teams, which I was ecstatic about
- We did stumble upon some REC Exclusive PM3s and Lil' Natives in 10V. I initially put some in the basket, but they didn't make the final cut
- Saw some interesting ones, like Spyoperas, Stovepipes, etc, but we weren't in the mental space to go after the top dollar or really rare/collectable items

Image

- Rex-121! They actually had some! I wasn't sure if they would, given it's release this summer, but sure enough they have a few of them. Kudos to the guys that pointed them out to me.
- The Mule Teams were cool. I saw a lot of varieties. They had Rex-T15, M398, B75P, VG XEOS, AEB-L, K294, 15V, SPY27, SRS13/SUS405, HIC, and ZDP-189, which is a pretty rare one from what I hear. Had a whole tray of them.
- Some of the best deals I saw were the $42 S30V G10 Manix 2s and the $37 S30V Native 5s. $53 Yojimbos. Just insane. Grabbed 2 of the Manix 2s and one will be a gift, and one will be my EDC. A couple of Yojimbos for gifts
- The son found an Assist, and decided he loved the Yojimbo as well. Initially he had also picked up a PM3 in Maxamet, but we were nearing out-of-control levels, so sacrifices had to be made...
- I do think that getting in line early gives a good opportunity for finding what you are looking for, but since everyone (us included) just piles dozens of knives in their carts, a lot of nice stuff gets returned back to the trays throughout the day. A collaborative, kind approach with others is the best - I heard a guy was looking for something, and what do you know, I had it in my cart (I think it was the Spyopera), and I wasn't going to get it, and it was just the one he was looking for, and he just happened to be going over his basket right next to me! Just cool stuff like that happening. Which leads me to:
- What was said to me before the sale was definitely true: make friends while you are there! That is the best way to find what you are looking for. I had at least 4-5 instances of gentlemen come up to me and say 'Hey I think you were looking for one of these' which was so incredibly cool.
- To the second guy who was looking for an Assist (after Nick): I'm so sorry man. I wasn't good in my communication, and should have said right from the beginning I had someone in our group that wanted whichever one we would release, and wanted to honor that. I hopefully learned from that.

At the top of my list was a Stretch 2 in K390, but I didn't see one. I saw some Enduras, some Delicas, a lot of serrated blades, and 1 Leafjumper. The Leafjumper almost came home with me, but in the end I decided leave it.

Very satisfying trip! Came home with a 15V Mule Team, a Sage 5 G10 in Rex-121, a Native 5 in Magnacut, and several other goodies that will be given out as gifts this year. My biggest knife-related takeaway, however, is that I love the Manix 2. It stood out well above all others as just the perfect knife for me. It was a really valuable experience to put hands on hundreds of knives and hone in those preferences. It was a little painful, but I left behind some Manix 2s in Magnacut and Cru-Wear. I couldn't take 'em all, even though I wanted to. There is always next year. Oh, and we will definitely be coming back. Only this time I'm going to take off Friday and just come in the morning lol.

Image

Here is what we had going until hard decisions had to be made

Last note: If Spyderco makes a Manix 2 in K390, then I'm just done. I've heard so much positive feedback on this knife steel from people who have been using it, and I'm really excited to still get my hands on some. A K390 Stretch 2 is still something that would be great to realize, but I now have a lot to play with. I have a very patient wife. And the daughter absolutely loves the Raffir Noble Chaparral.

Thanks!

Not getting the Cru-Wear and Magnacut Manix 2s hurt a bit, but the wife being okay with a ton of $$ being spent was the soothing balm to the pain :grin-squint Just getting to know that the Manix 2 was my jam was a win in and of itself. And S30V is no slouch.

The real question is what happens after the sale. Is there stuff left over? I was talking w/ someone about another 15V Mule Team. If they didn't sell out, would they have those at the Outlet that someone could ask for?

My guess… they keep putting them out each year until they have too much stuff. At that point they clear out with an online sale.

But yes I would love to call, ask if they have any seconds Mules in stock and get one sent to me. I just have a feeling that would be a total nightmare and make no money.
