I still am in for a UKPK so all members from everywhere can have an opportunity to participate getting one . Just where I stand on the subject not trying to disrespect anyone . MG2
I appreciate your thoughtfulness! I only carry non-locking knives due to my local laws and therefore would like to chime in that I'd love to buy a forum edition of the SPY27 UKPK.

Really bummed out here. From another thread I found this forum knife debate just as the poll went live in 2023, then read until the end. Baffled that all the work up fizzled out after long periods of no activity, so I then read from the beginning. There will never be agreement.

My take ?
I purchased my first spyderco military in circa 1998 in my early 20's, I loved that knife, but it was tragically lost. Tragically! no really, my best friend, gone.

"Whipping it out" while blazing saddle women faint, grabbing the blade hole and with a light abrupt wrist twist, that crisp snappp! You know what I mean!

Tragedy was mitigated and mental trauma lessened many years later when I acquired a PM2Max. It is loved. It once slipped unknowingly from my waste band (think Anne of green gables here) while fertilizing a deep tree well, in a snow storm, while snowmobiling many miles into the back country. Two weeks I felt naked until a proper retrieval party was re-mounted for a now realized successful rescue.
The Maxamet now has more patina.....and earned!
Deep emotional bond strengthened :woozy

My young sons edc carry spyderco knives. Recently they are upgrading to G10 para lines. The deal is they pay half. Now they have deeper respect for their tools.

Back to my take.

When my sons new PM3 arrived, I read through all the literature, there is no mention of any official spyderco forum. And although I utilize forums of all manor, it never occurred to me that spyderco may have a forum, at least just recently. I've read so many threads on blade steel, model variations, sharpening for each blade alloy and usage, just enormous info. But in reading I realized how much one depends on there edc. I am no exception, it is the one bare necessity I feel naked without. Wallet, forget about it, knife, hold my poodle. Every time I deploy, I admire.

Reading posts from Sal is refreshing to have an owners involvement at this level!

I propose that knife packaging include a forum info leaflet that had an incentive program, awarded by merit perhaps?
If I understand correctly, spyderco offers engraving.

Create a specific "forum engraving design" with date dependent on order date. Offer it complements of joining the forum and after 10 posts. After 50 bona fide posts you lock in a discount code for any in stock approved models. 200 open up another model? 1000posts? Maybe not, it'd cause a poo-storm of poo-posts. Ok, just the complementary personalized engraving?

Lets change course and make it unique. Users would be disinclined to sell and the project could be done without any new models.

I argue that 90% of the world population would be covered proficiently for 90% of daily tasks with a military line knife :shush

If wharncliffe blade shape is an option on a UKPK forum knife then that with blue G-10 and Spy27.

If for no better reason than The steel combined with the UKPK edge geometry and wharny blade shape will make it the easiest CPM knife in the Spyderco lineup to maintain super-high level sharpness.

If wharny isn’t an option then drop point.

I love the Wharnie idea ! Count me in , I could live with a drop point but the Wharnie blade would be a great tribute to its origin . MG2

Really like the idea of the UKPK knife in SPY27. Would prefer blue to blurple and a drop point vs wharncliffe, but not a deal breaker if it is blurple with a wharnie blade. A full backspacer ,as suggested, would be a very cool addition.

What would be the minimum qty to order? 600 to 1000?

Yes but that’s just a normal FRN UKPK available in every single place where Spydercos are sold.

If your going to do a Spyderco forum knife you might as well do it right and allow it to be something a bit more special. No?

Wharncliffe
G10 (couldn’t care less about the colour personally)
Spy27
Full length back spring - 4 pin construction

Sold!

Yes, I agree that it should be something special. I believe the best way to achieve that is to let Spyderco decide on both model and configuration. An agreeable consensus will never be reached through forum discussion.

As someone who tried to get the DamaUKPK project done I agree with this wholeheartedly.

It's poll after poll with people voting and commenting wanting all sorts or stuff that was impractical. Some openly had no interest in the product. We hammered it out in a few months, but that was over 4 years ago now.

Design by committee is a pain in the arse, rarely works at all, and if it does often yields a safe and boring product. It is better for some people to hate it than for everyone to be placated.

As much as I am a total fascist earlier in this thread, a Wharncliffe blade is the only thing I would not budge on.

Throwing out the idea of the letter F on the back of the spydie bug logo as method to designate Forum Knife.

Think there was a thread/poll about how best to do this some time ago … like etch on the spine and so forth … but I can’t find it.

For some reason this popped into my head the other day as did a dark green G10 UKPK.

I remember that, I thought that one was really gaining steam too. Sal was heavily involved as well. These days when I see a new thread pop up about a forum knife I don't even bother looking at it. Kind of like a new person asking about buying 1 of 3 knives and then a few pages in there's people suggesting 25 other knives. Those kind of threads never fail to go totally off the rails. Most of the time those new folks don't even stick around, probably overwhelmed...same as a forum knife idea.

Understand your thoughts and have bowed out mostly because I think Spyderco will make a decision and that will be it . I do look forward to buy one if and when it happens . Dan

How many times have we seen these scenarios? Part of the problem is there's just too many great models and everyone has to state the one they think is best.

Same as people continuously asking for some new variation or in between size of a particular model.

Such a well thought out justification of why we shouldn’t have a forum knife.

Hard NO on forum knife

It’s never anything I really want… that’s the problem with a committee designed anything.

Now if Sal comes up with something it would stand a good chance I might like it.
