Dock Worker Strike Effect On Spyderco?

#1

Post by SpyderEdgeForever »

Will the dock worker strike badly effect Spyderco or not? A friend told me that will help American made producers because USA made goods are made in USA factories and shipped by truck to rural and urban retailers. Disposable hygiene goods like toilet paper abd Spyderco knives and parts made in USA will shine and be sold he said. What will suffer are sales of the goods from China India Japan Europe etc. Your thoughts?

I speculate since this is a strike and not a slowdown, it won't last very long. Long enough to cause annoying or painful disruptions certainly, but not long like the 2014-15 West Coast ports slowdown, hopefully. So for discretionary purchases like high-end knives, I'm not sure this will make afis abandon imports.

While the strike is in place, some goods will be stuck, and some goods will divert to other ports. This will strain the capacity at other ports, railroads, and trucking. I expect nobody who relies on logistics feels like a winner from this.

Is your friend uniquely qualified to make their statement? I’m genuinely curious if they know something I don’t.

This guy has more friends and sources than anybody I know. How do you "know" this many people, are they all internet people??

Anyways, I think pocket knives are pretty far down the list of things people will be worried about should this strike last and effect the economy the way it could. Sometimes I think you post, just to post.

Nope. Just someone who watches the news and answered when I asked how that strike will effect American consumer goods and knife companies like Spyderco. That was his reply.

I want the American consumers and the workers and companies and allies to be okay, like Spyderco. Was looking for good news on that.

He never explains that. It’s just a way to couch his personal opinion or an interesting but implausible idea as having authority and/or denying plausibility when someone — inevitably — points out a factual inaccuracy.

It seems kind of troll-ish but mostly I assume he just likes talking about lots of stuff and doesn’t know how to say “hey here is a crazy thing about real life Star Trek phasers, I want to believe it”.

Interesting question. As previously mentioned, only East Coast dockworkers are on strike. Imports from Asian nations are brought across the Pacific to our western shore. I expect Spyderco knives made in Europe (Italy) could suffer low availability and higher prices. I don't think many Spyders are made in Italy, though, right?

Any of these used to make knives? Bananas, Pinapples, or European cars.

I appreciate people taking time to start new topics for discussion. Makes the forum more lively.

Shipping companies already notifying customers about delays (reasonable) and increased costs (ugh). As if they didn't rake in hundreds of billions of dollars in profits last year.

Where is of course a possibility that raw materials could be affected. I think more likely other things like cars and food will be affected.

Seems like they reached a tentative deal which suspends the strike through 2025-1-15. So more action may come later. Lots of variables can change between now and then.

Christmas season won't be impacted at least, which is nice.

There is certainly much going on in the world today that could/would have an effect in our lives.

True point, sal. Hey here is an idea that would be good if it can be made. Picture a variable mold with parts that are mutable and can be changed to make new patterns of say handles for knives. That way you can reuse the same mold for any handle instead of requiring a new mold.
