Not Rex 121-specific but I found this bit interesting:RamZar wrote: ↑Fri Sep 13, 2024 12:54 pmThe September 2024 issue of the Spyderco byte newsletter covers the Sage™ 5 CPM® REX® 121® (C123GBORP / C123BORP) and older Sage models.

I would've thought the 1 was at least somewhat competitive with the 5 for sales, especially since the Sage 5 CF didn't escape discontinuation either and given the 1's Maxamet revival, but I guess that settles it definitively for the 5.Released in 2016, the initial expression of the Sage 5 featured skeletonized stainless steel liners and textured carbon fiber/G-10 laminate scales. Its thin, open-backed construction kept weight to a minimum, while capitalizing on the strength and ease of operation of its lock. This unique combination of features quickly established the Sage 5 as the most popular member of the series.

I haven’t read every comment on this thread so this might have been covered already but I wonder if we’ll ever see an SE Rex 121 knife.

Re: Sage 5 in REX 121 + burnt orange
Can we rename “Burnt Orange” to Baked Beans? This will be popular for the UK crowd. Might need a UK compliant version… It would sell like hotcakes, I mean Baked beans

I think you might be alone in thinking that it looks like baked beans.

Hi Al,
That depends on demand from you. Also, at this time, we don't yet know if it can handle teeth? In plain edge, every point of the edge has another point next to it to help support its structure. In serrations, each tooth has to stand on its own. Some steels can't handle that.

Would a gently undulating wave style serration be more appropriate, similar to what is on the Ambitious SE or Caribbean? I would imagine if the serrations could maintain integrity it would make a for a very (very very!) long lasting working edge.
Anyway, kudos to you guys for putting a production knife out in it in any blade type

Re: Sage 5 in REX 121 + burnt orange
I carried my 121 lightweight for the first time last week and really got a chance to study it at work.
It has a good argument for being the most “extreme” spyderco ever released, material-wise. Rex 121 is a steel that’s just obscene in property and when you pair it with such a bold color G10…holy cow…
Now, you could say “yeah but it’s not a civilian or a matriarch, etc” but those knives are extreme in form as opposed to composition.

What a brilliant marketing move to have a Pumpkin Spice knife come out right as the gods of marketing are releasing all things pumpkin spice. I do think you are on to something. 100000000% better than a burnt orange. Sal, I demand to know who came up with that color name and can we make him work for nothing all next year?

Re: Sage 5 in REX 121 + burnt orange
The "regular" compression-lock version of the Sage 5 REX 121 weighs 3.1 oz according to Blade HQ. The lightweight version doesn't seem lightweight at 3.0 oz. Can someone who owns one confirm the weight? Why is the lightweight not really lightweight?

Re: Sage 5 in REX 121 + burnt orange
Dear DrMEMS:
Welcome to the Spyderco Forum.
In our product naming, "Lightweight" indicates the use of injection-molded FRN scales, as opposed to scales machined from solid G-10. In most cases, this difference does reduce the weight of the knife noticeably. However, depending on how "lean" the G-10 model is, that weight difference may be less pronounced. When it's significant, I typically call it out in the product copy.
Stay safe,
Mike

Thanks, Mike, for the explanation.
I've been lurking on the forum for a decade and finally had to ask a question. I have half a dozen Spydercos, dating back to a Delica ClipIt with G-2 stainless steel and a sword grind--maybe from the early 1990s.
