Why I like Spyderco

As my collection is growing, I am slowly building up my preferences as well. Each of us is different and we all have different needs and expectations. I have other brands too and I am a fan of some other knives as well, but Spyderco provides me with a lot of value (I don't buy very expensive stuff generally speaking) and comfort for the future, when my dexterity is going to deteriorate. Spyderhole is still the easiest way to deploy the knife, even when some other brands may offer a bit slicker action. I feel like I would have a pretty good insurance for the future with Spyderco without compromising on quality.

Innovative, excellent heat treatment, very knowledgeable about metallurgy, thinking outside of the box from a design perspective, customer oriented, the forum, wide variety of steels, superb designs that will stand the test of time and last but not least the great folks that are Spyderco.

What really drew me to Spyderco was the steels they made available to customers at reasonable prices. I picked up a couple of ZDP-189 Dragonfly 2's when I was curious about that steel. I was hooked. What kept me with Spyderco is the quality, the thought that goes into every product and the constant advancements. I remember reading years ago about how the S30V UKPK needed an upgraded backspring to keep it from being eaten away by the abrasive S30V blade and being super impressed that a knife company would pay attention to something like that! I'm currently very into S110V and to a lesser extent S90V, and I absolutely trust Spyderco to give me the best possible product at a reasonable price. Helps that Spyderco is a really great group of people as well!

I try to support small-ish American companies that grew from a visionary leader who works to build quality products. Spyderco and Paul Reed Smith guitars, a home grown Maryland company. Both a testament to real people who knew what they wanted and went out and built it.

I don't have a knife shop near me so I bought a lot of knives to handle them. I liked the knives on the websites, but after getting them in hand I had more information to go on. Over the last decade I must have spent $25,000 on knives.

I never had the opportunity to go to a Blade Show, or to travel to Golden. I've never met anyone who was a bladesmith or knife manufacturer. I'd like to do all of these things. Maybe some day. The cutomers, staff, and owners are responsible for making these companies what they are. Without customers coming back, you do not have a company. Spyderco has a very strong following. Everyone that has met any of Spyderco's staff say they are are all excellent.

Some knives are a lot heavier than you would think for their size. Spyderco knives are pretty light. I don't put much into lightness, but if you like nononsense knives, Spyderco does not seem to be adding steel to their knives to embellish some hidden attribute, in fact they cut out and spend money and resources to make their knives lighter.

Most knives do not come with cutting edge steel. Spyderco's heat treats are right up there with the best, and offer nothing but the best blade steel. Most companies offer nice designs, in run of the mill or garbage steels.

Some knives will close on your hand with a little pressure on the back of the blade when open. Never had a problem with a Spyderco. Spyderco locks have never failed me.

So far, the best folder with grippy G-10 is Emerson, but Spyderco is not far off.

That sums it up as to why I like Spyderco.

Very true. I have the serrated K390 Delica and it’s an absolute beast. The thing has built up a beautiful patina. I would invest in a plain edge version also but I just got the MicroMelt PD1 sprint Delica and am enjoying that at the moment.

As a knife pattern, the Delica gets it all very right. It took me a long time to get one but once I did, I understood what the fuss was about.

Spyderco designs are well-balanced, where each part of the design works synergistically with other design elements to create a tool that performs very well. Spyderco is also at the leading edge of materials research for blade steels, which I appreciate.

Owners are true knife nerds
The logo
Heat treatments
Ergonomics
Compression lock
Phosphor bronze washers (literally the whole knife market is using bearings now, so PB washers is rare in knives today)
Simplicity of designs
OpFocus
***round hole for deployment*** (so simple yet so so important)
Looks (everyone knows just by looking at the knife, it’s a Spyderco)
