Knife lubricant
Re: Knife lubricant
I use a combo of KPL drop into the bering area and also use a shaving brush loaded with Wilsons Ultima Lube on the knife action (as well as all my firearms). For rust and corrosion I wipe down everything with an ancient can of liquid Birchwood Casey Sheath. Has worked for me for decades.

Re: Knife lubricant
I would say that this should be a poll, but there's too many preferred options and the results wouldn't show much.
I use the same cleaner/lube as I do on my guns. My go-to products are Eezox, Ballistol, and WD-40
If the knife gets a wash including soap and/or water, then WD-40 to get out the water followed by an oil or rust inhibitor like Eezox (not food safe), or Ballistol. For my stainless knives, they get whatever is closest at hand.

Re: Knife lubricant
Right? It's like asking the truck guys what oil is best. Valvoline? Oilzum? Esso? Synthetic? With STP? Ask them that question after they've had a few beers, and you can be guaranteed a ruckus. Don't ask the same question to our guys after they've had a few beers... because... we carry knives.
P.S.
I choose the lubricants for my knives the same way you do: by using what I already use on my guns.

Re: Knife lubricant
I've never seen a compelling reason to use a different wet lube than mineral oil.
It works well for the role. No smell. Food safe. I can buy a 5 years supply for $2 in any grocery store in the country.
Out of curiosity I looked up the price of nano lube.
LOL. Shipping a tiny little tube to my house costs more than a decade supply of mineral oil. That's just the shipping costs mind you, not the cost of the oil itself.
For something so mechanically simple as a knife, I don't see the point in using anything fancy. Especially if you use them on food ever. There's only so much of a difference different oils can make on something so basic.
I don't mind shelling out for the nice stuff on my car, but mineral oil is too practical for me to use anything else on knives.

Re: Knife lubricant
I use frog lube on my guns and knives. I like how it dries without leaving an oily substance. It also soaks into knife scales and dries nicely. I have noticed that pivots will get a little sticky (?) when I put knives into storage in my safe. But that is solved by some fidgeting with the knife opening and closing for a short while. My garage gets really hot in the sun since it is poorly insulated and the house cooks all day. I’m pretty sure it gets well over 110 in there and I’ve not noticed any oily melted frog lube oil in my safe. But in the end I think it’s person preference. I’ve try several different brands before I settled on the current one I use. Think of it as a journey of what works for you.
On a separate note why doesn’t Spyderco create its own knife lube. Knowing how they test things I’d definitely buy that.

Re: Knife lubricant
Don’t know if I missed this in the thread but what lube does Spyderco use? Just got my Delica PD#1 and it is well oiled by Spyderco.

Re: Knife lubricant
My favorite is actually shimano reel oil…the same stuff I use on my baitcasters. Whenever I crack open one of my Shamans, etc. after months and months of use…it’ll always still be lubed up quite nicely.

Re: Knife lubricant
I have a couple of these little applicator bottles here in my office, a couple on my workbench, one up at my work location, and... I think that's it. Depending on where they are and what I do there, they might contain Ballistol, ALG Go-Juice, Redrum, spindle oil, or Cat oil. These bottles are from Liberty Products on Amazon. Seventeen bucks for ten.
Re: Knife lubricant
I use food safe mineral oil. it isn’t the best, but it works well, is cheap, food safe, and I use it for other stuff like my hardwood kitchenware.

Re: Knife lubricant
For years i've been using Benchmade blue lube. I know its a faux pas to use it on Spyderco's
Great stuff!

Re: Knife lubricant
I really prefer greases over liquid lubes. We use this stuff at work and I've tried it in a couple knives and it's pretty darn good. Not food safe but since it's grease it stays where you put it so I don't worry about it getting in my food. I'm never jamming my knife so far into food that the pivot goes in.

Re: Knife lubricant
For the last couple years I've been using jujube/jojoba oil. It's pretty thin so makes the action real nice, is food safe as well, can be used for massages if one is so inclined.
It has one drawback, usually small but can be big in certain conditions - it tends to polimerize if it's in cold conditions for extended periods and turns into a thick and sticky goop. Having it in an outer pocket in winter at -20*C for a couple hours is fine but shipping over the weekend in similar conditions is usually a messy endeavor. At least it's decently easy to wash off with warm water and soap...
