Where is Sal? I haven't seen him on the forum in a while. I hope he is okay.

I was wondering that myself. 🤞🏻 he’s alright and just busy off living his best life.

He is probably in his workshop working in the dark designing some new thinking out of the box model we all will go crazy for… ;)

I want to add my appreciation for Sal and this forum. This forum is a unique internet haven for knife nuts and missing Sal’s “zen remarks” comment is spot on.

I've been thinking the same thing for a while, and made a comment about it in a different thread recently. I thought he might be relaxing "on island", and I hope he is.

Sal has been conspicuously absent from posting in the last few months. He’s still logging in from time to time based on what his user stats are but I agree that I also miss his input. Spyderco is definitely changing in terms of its focus, and I suppose that’s to be expected, but I feel it’s becoming more disconnected from listening and responding to our conversations here on the forum. It used to be that us complaining about the lack of an obvious model (like a green LC200N Dfly for example) would be quickly righted by Sal telling us it’s in the queue (however long the queues at the different factories might be). Eric doesn’t have the level of interaction with us, and while Kristi and MJ have stepped up to fill the void a bit, there’s no replacing Sal. I fear those days are never to return… None of my post is meant to be negative, derogatory or disrespectful, it’s just a changing of the seasons is clearly in the air and all this was bound to happen eventually.

Thoughtful post. I hope you are premature, but you may well not be, and yeah, change is inevitable.

I value your understanding on this but this scares me. I prefer companies to stay family mom and pop companies with the personal care we have received from sal and Spyderco. The idea of us losing that in any form saddens me 😪

Wow didn’t realize it had been that long. Miss seeing his responses. Hope everything is well and that he is just focused on expansion currently.

What i am going to say needs to be seen in the most respectful and positive way possible way.
The problem with Family companies is they can grown to enormous giants under its founder but once the founder steps aside and the next generation takes over many of them go in decline and regrettably some of them even vanish.

Now in the case of Spyderco i think the company is safe from this thanks to Eric.
But we need to face the fact that besides Eric being a wonderful person and an amazing knife designer he is not Sal. Eric is from what i have noticed more a worker then a talker so i do not see him sitting on the forum connecting with the fans as much as Sal does. So we need to except that that little change will happen one day. (Hopefully that change is decades away)
I do not believe our words will be unheard but yeah they will carry less of an impact probably.

You guys finally scared him off. In all seriousness I hope he is enjoying himself on a beach in Kauai with a Magnacut PM2 by his side.

I am certain the opposite has happened here. Sal was comfortable with the company being 50 to 60 people, doing business on the scale it was in the 1990s. Eric is more ambitious and has been the driving force of the expansion.

I hope that all is well with Sal and Gail and they are enjoying some time away.
