Police 2 SS blade shrinking!!!

#1

Post by rubes160 »

Hey all,

So, I have sent my Police 2 SS PE back to Spyderco for sharpening. I think my blade is getting substantially smaller because of the process. Does it look WAY smaller to you all? Or am I just used to my bigger Police 4? Any input welcome here. Thanks!

That looks like a serrated blade that has been turned into a plain edge. The question is, what did it look like before?

Nope this was a brand-new plain edge I got in 2017. I've sent it off to Spyderco 3 times since then. That much metal has been removed huh???!!!!

If it had been thoroughly trashed each time, maybe. I have first generations with less ground away.

This one is about the same age.

When I sent it in each time, the blade was useable. There were no chips at all. I just couldn't get the angle back on it so I gave up, and sent it in. Is this something I should get in touch with Spyderco about? It just recently came back to from this last sharpening, a couple weeks ago...

It looks to be at least 3/8" short as well as the width being greatly reduced. I'd contact Warranty and Repair, although I don't know what they could do other than replacing the knife. Without at least photographic evidence (before and after sharpening pictures) they may not do anything. You say you couldn't get the edge angle back on it, that regrind may be what it took.

I suppose I should have taken pictures before. Yea this blade definitely has had some serious metal removed. I will get in touch with Spyderco. They should have record of the most recent sharpening and I have the paperwork as well. So, I'm not crazy in thinking that this most sharpening by them has shrunk my 2nd gen Police!

You sent Spyderco a knife that was dull. You tried to sharpen it but couldn't. They did what you could not.

Sharpening a knife without removing metal is impossible. A screwed up edge requires the removal of a lot of metal. Expecting Spyderco to give you a new knife is unreasonable.

I don't speak for Spyderco, but if someone asked me to sharpen their knife, but placed limitations on how much material could be removed, I'd hand it back and suggest they should find someone else to do the work.

I know how sharpening a blade works, but I didn't think it would merit this much metal removal. This isn't my first knife. That being said, I wasn't after a new knife from Spyderco. At most, maybe a discount off a new one. I'm a life-long customer RustyIron. I was just surprised at how much had to be done to it this time around. It seemed a little aggressive on the sharpening.

I had to check that knife out myself! Kinda cool looking. At this point, since my Police was laser etched for me, and holds sentimental value, is it much of a user edc knife anymore?

Some could say that the behind the edge geometry is thicker and it's not as slicey at this blade geometry, but slicey isn't the only attribute of a knife. If it's sharp and it cuts what you want it to then it's still plenty a user. It's got that grandpa's knife vibe to it too which is something you don't see around here because we all have too many knives for any of them to get a lifetime worth of sharpening on just one knife.

When you can't sharpen the knife yourself. And you ruin the blade to the point where you have to send it to Spyderco to fix.

They will grind it down sufficiently to get a good edge.

Use the knife properly and learn how to sharpen it yourself.

Righty-o, Rubes.
I've never had Spyderco sharpen any of my knives, but if one of my serrated blades gets goofed up worse than I can repair, I'll send it off to them. But for regular plain edged knives, I prefer to do things myself because I trust myself to do it the way I want. If I recall correctly, Spyderco will whip a regular sharpening on any of their knives. If it's goofed up and needs to be reground, there's an extra fee involved. It looks as if yours was reground.

Probably what's happening is the warehouse guys are replacing the knife with and exact copy each time except a few percent smaller. So eventually it will turn into an Endura and then a Delica.

I've sent a couple back for other issues, they fixed the issue and sharpened the blade like new. Even to my calibrated eyes there was no change in size.

It was definitely reground it seems. My mistake was not taking the time to do it myself when the edge got a little carried away. I've only had the Spyderco sharpmaker for a few weeks now and it has been keeping my blades in tip top shape. I didn't have it when my Police model was getting out of whack, or I would have kept tuning the blade up on the sharpmaker. This was my fault, sadly. But it's still a neat blade to me. It's got that sentimental value.

hard to pass up a derail, lol
;)
You have Calibrated Eyes !?

My Friend!
We need to get together!
I have calibrated fingers, wrists, elbows, and shoulders!
LOL!

Like - I can't tell what my BTE thickness is by looking at it, BUT a quick pinch with the fingertips and BAM!
Lug nuts, oil pan plug, etc... No problems LOL

If he were to put that knife in my hand - I would instantly be able to tell that it's weight was the same, it's lock bar tension the same, etc... Concurring with you (obviously, and of course, lol).

I don't think it's ruined at all, despite the smaller blade. We all change shape as we get older. I would keep it as is, use it for lighter tasks, and touch it up gently and often, on the white Sharpmaker stones.
