Thinnest Spyderco model

#1

Post by redrider736 »

New member.

I have been edc a PM3-LW and have enjoyed its simplicity & overall size.

What is the thinnest spyderco model?
Looking for something comparable to the PM3-LW just was curious to know if they're is a thinner option?

Sticking with the Compression Lock in that size range, the Watu might be an option and it is still readily available.

The Sage 5 is the natural alternative to the Para 3 and it has thinner blade stock.

The Sage 5 Lightweight might be the best option.

Watu.

Chaparral has a slightly thinner blade, but is quite a bit smaller than the P3.

Actually, stainless models are even slimmer than the Chaparral and Watu. They are typically between 0.25 and 0.30 thick, versus 0.32-0.34 and 0.41, respectively. Despite their slimness, they are heavier.

Welcome to the forum Red Rider.

If you’re asking about a thinner blade, I’d checkout the Chapparal and Dragonfly. They’re both smaller, but very slicey out of the box.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

Don’t overlook the Centofante 3; it’s hollow ground 2mm blade stock is about the size of a Delica.

You could almost miss a stainless steel Police while patting someone down. Almost..

Then Chaparral is thinner than the Dragonfly and I have both and am a huge Dragonfly fan. However I’ve found that even the much thicker Native 5 is very slicey. It’s the blade geometry and how they grind the edge thin. That’s why I am a Spyderco fan or one of the main reasons at least. But the Chaparral is nice and thin and the lightweight version is very portable in pocket and secure in hand. It’s also the most smooth action that really rivals custom folders. For me it took some experimenting to see what floated my boat. I’m locked in tight now. Good luck on your journey.

Actually I was thinking more blade stock thin but overall the Chaparral is a very slim overall piece. Dragonfly is slim overall.

Welcome Red Ryder, I believe the Delica has a thinner blade stock and it’s a classic 👍

Yes, I am glad you posted this. I hesitated on the Centofante 3 at 2mm because I'm generally into 3 mm and thicker but I received this model and it is great.

The Catcherman deserves mention, at least.

Not thinnest, but at 2.5mm and worth considering is the Ikuchi.
So it goes.

Catcherman should have a pretty thin blade as well.

The Native 5 is pretty far from being slicey ;). Even the Native Chief has a much slimmer geometry and it's no slicer itself. There are plenty other Spydies that straight up flow through material, but the native family (in the latest generation) isn't it.

The japanese backlocks would be my first stop - great price point, K390, lightweight and really good geometry, especially on the delica, though most are really slim.

The Kapara is also a really slim blade and hasn't been mentioned yet

Thin handled - stainless lockbacks

Thin blade - catcherman and z cuts are both under 2mm.

No doubt about it, it’s slicey. However I never use a factory edge and i actually use the knife so I this is easy to ascertain. Probably sharpen different than most giving mine a very acute and still very durable convex edge. Anything that will slice a carrot without breaking it is slicey. I’ve sliced many things with this blade.

According to the 2024 Amsterdam Meet thread, the upcoming Charisma has 1mm blade thickness, so that should be pretty thin and slicey.

Copied from that thread:

Approximate Specifications
Overall Length: 6.73 inch / 171 mm
Blade Length: 3 inch / 76 mm
Blade Thickness: 0.04 inch / 1 mm
Steel: CTS-BD1N
Weight: 0.8 oz / 23 g
Grind: Full-flat
Handle: FRN
