Wegner Junior??
Wegner Junior??
We all know how popular the C-48 Tim Wegner has become in the last year or so. It seems like Spyders always do after they have been discontinued (hence the Gunting). But the one out of that line I like the most is the Wegner Junior ( C-49) which is the C-48's little brother. I must say that it took me quite a while to find both of the Wegner Juniors. They must be considerably much more rare than the C-48 big guy.
Also from a collector's standpoint I would think that the Wegner Junior would be the one to target. I hardly ever see one on EBay. The one that expired this last weekend I think went for well over $110 or so. Does anyone know how long that they ran the Junior C-49 in production? It is an excellent mid sized blade with an awesome design just like it's big brother.
Now Tim Wegner obviously has his own company called BLADE-TECH. He did put out the MOUSE Again under the BLADE-TECH name but I have not seen him re-do the Junior model. I think that if he would the sales would explode. Why is this blade so elusive and for the most part not known very well? Not to mention almost impossible to find now a days. :spyder:

Long Live the SPYDEREDGE Spyderco Hawkbills RULE!!
Helloooooo!!!!!! anybody home????
Come on guys!!! I know that Ted and I aren't the only ones here in Spyderville who have or like the C-49 Tim Wegner Jr. With one just going for $122 this last weekend then certainly someone should be liking it. I will admit I don't know of too many collectors who have one but I have not heard anything bad about it either.
You can't tell me that the C-48 is almost a cult classic but the C-49 is to be ignored. NO!! I don't believe that at all. I'll bet somebody here on the Forum has one besides me & Ted :)

based on the fact that i like the big one ok i would really snatch one of the juniors up if indeed i could actually come across one up here in the great white north///i will admit i have never handled one of the smaller ones, but i think they look the perfect size for edc(like i would actually edc it!)

Aloha Joe,
Yep...I HAD a Wegner Jr. but I gave it away. It was/is a great knife, can be held in every grip, and the G10 scales...*sigh*. One day however, i will figure out a way to get one of Outlaw's full sized versions in PE...
God bless

 OK - I guess I was wrong then :ogary sims wrote:I saw a prototype of a new Wegner junior at the blade show. I fell in love with it bit I haven't heard anything about it yet. They improved the old version( believe it or not!) The knife will be G-10 and S-30V if it comes out. Blade-tech is a little slow I suppose but I'm still waiting.
JD,
I may in the minority, I found the handle and hole too small for me. I had the C48 first. I read the the C49 was an exact reduction of the C48, for me it didn't translate to my hands well. I did get two of them one to try and one on speculation. I traded one and the second is waiting for the right Q to come along :D

Be Excellent to each other.
Wegner jr. is my all time favorite. Whatever I buy, I always find some room in my pockets or bag for Wegner jr. PE. Lil' T is probably the best high-tech Spyderco folder, but, again, Wegner jr. is incredibly tough, sturdy, little folder with a very reliable liner lock. I never found such a lock - whatever I tried (no prying) I didn't succeed to disengage a lock! With a hollow grind it is also a very good cutter.
Well, one should probably think about a sprint run with some exotic steel. I have in mind CPM S125V (a high performance upgrade to CPM S90V) with superior wear resistance, and hardened to HRC 62-64.
Sprint runs with exotic steels are good hits, as ZDP-189 Cally jr. and Delica show.
Also to consider is the NONstainless steel (Spyderco avoids it, but BM uses M2). The real challenge would be CPM Rex 121, 'a super high speed steel with the highest wear resistance and hardness available in any tool steel (HRC 68)'. It has 3.4% C, 4% Cr, 9.5% V, 5.0 Mo, 10.0% W, and 9% Co.

Over the years six C49s have crossed my path:
#s 1 & 2 were both PE and purchased mail order at $54.95 as closeout items from Nationwide Sports Distributors (now defunct). I cherry picked the nicer of the two and sold the other at my workplace for $70.00.
#s 3 & 4 were also PE models and purchased together for $120.00 cash at Waikoloa Duxshot (also, sadly, defunct). One had a slight nick or defect at the edge of the Spyder hole that I polished out using the classic Clover/.308 Winchester technique.
#5 was a "last-day-of-show-clearance" combo-edge specimen picked up for $50.00 cash at a Soldier of Fortune Convention in Vegas. Nobody grabbed it earlier, I suppose, because while mint condition in all respects, no box or papers accompanied it.
#6 is another combo model. It was rescued about a year ago from the dregs at the bottom of a box of recycled rubber bands (where it may have lain unnoticed for years). The G-10 was in still in great shape and minor blade discoloration cleaned up nicely with Flitz. It's not perfect; the blade tip is bent about 1/64" out-of-true (so whaddaya expect for a freebie?). Still, it serves as an adequate "beater" Wegner Junior and occasionally comes up in my irregular EDC rotation. Maybe one of these days I'll take the trouble to break out the bench vise and straighten the tip. . . .
All in all, I have to echo praise for the ergonomics of the Wegner Juniors. Opening and closing is easy to do both left- and right-handed, with easy left (and in my case, weak) hand manipulation being a good indicator of thoughtful design.
Negatives? Like most Wegners (both C48 and C49), one may eventually encounter the "liner slides all the way to the right" malady that liner locks of that era are prone to. Even Tim Wegner saw this condition as a defect. Fortunately, this doesn't usually result in an unreliable lockup (though, of course, YMMV).
Yes, I'd like to see an updated C49 in the ferrous flesh, but find and handling an Ocelot comes first on my Spydie to-do list!

JD, let's just say that you can be happy in the knowledge that you'll never have me competing with you for the limited supply of C48 and C49 Wegners. Not my cuppa.

Well GOD Bless you Deacon I'll remember that :) . Wegners Jr. looking for new home
I cannot find a "knives for sale" topic, so please, excuse if I am out of line.
I have a Spyderco Wegner full size (C48) plain blade and a Spyderco Wegner Jr. with 50/50 blade I am considering parting with. Both are in excellent condiiton, never having been sharpened. Sorry, no boxes. $100 each + shipping.
Also, have a Blade Tech Hunter with partially serrated blade, excellent condition, box for the same price.
Again, disregard if I am out of line with this post.
Thanks,
Marty
