I again today and yesterday received a bunch of old alerts for forum replies from weeks ago

Ditto! Loads of them and it continues.

I can't guarantee this will solve your problem, but it's the first step.

1. Go to your User Control Panel -- Overview -- Manage Subscriptions.

2. For every entry in that list, click the box and delete it. Don't stop until the list is empty.

3. Click on Board Preferences -- Edit Notification Options.

4. For every Notification Type, uncheck every box in the Email Column and Notifications Column.

5. Click Submit.

6. Live happily ever after.

Of course, that’ll work but that’s not the point. Before the forum upgrade emailed notifications were working just fine. It’s supposed to be emailed notifications of new posts to subscribed threads.
