Seki City back lock quality in 2022?
Re: Seki City back lock quality in 2022?
My experience with recent Seki made lockbacks/mid lock is a Dragonfly and Delica. Both of them are from the Blue/grey Zome sprint run and they are rock solid. I have no issues with either.
Re: Seki City back lock quality in 2022?
Got a k390 Delica recently. The knife is perfectly fine, but I would much prefer not to have that 'give' in the lock when applying more pressure on the edge. But I understand this has more to do with the design of the lock rather than quality of the production.
... I like weird ...

Ehhhhh I stand by it.
To be fair, I should mention that the comparison is about 15 years old.
I used to sell them side by side with Spyderco in college, and at that point you couldn’t have paid me to carry a recon.
It does sound like they’ve improved quite a bit.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.
Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

Yeah, absolutely zero interest in CS here either, but they don't make them for me.

15 years ago I'm pretty sure they were still on the ultra lock version with a different handle shape.kennethsime wrote: ↑Wed Mar 06, 2024 12:42 amEhhhhh I stand by it.

Things are a lot different now. They're using S35VN instead of AUS8. DLC instead of cheap painted on coating. Standard G10 texture. Lower ride clips.
So, just wanted to point out to anyone reading, most those things aren't true about a CS Recon you can buy today.
It'd be like me making fun of Spyderco for making Enduras with integral clips and AUS8 blade steel and pinned blades in 2024.....when they haven't made them that way for 20 years or so.
Current Recon 1's compare favorably to the Manix XL / Shaman / Endura in many ways. To me it's not a clear cut case of one being better than the other, they each have their qualities. Enduras carry better because they're thinner and lighter, but Recons have a thicker handle that's more comfortable for harder cuts, and for my hand a more ergonomic shape.
I keep both brands in my EDC tray and choose which design will match the days work the best. In most respects I find their quality comparable these days.

Hello, Mike!Michael Janich wrote: ↑Mon Mar 04, 2024 7:45 amDear kojaq48:
Welcome to the Spyderco Forum.
Could you please tell us what portion of the blade has the chips? I see them clearly in the photos, but I'm not positive where they are on the blade.
Thank you.
Stay safe,
Mike
Exactly as Giygas wrote,
“This is the part of the catch that the bolt catch engages.”
Since I bought the knives new from the store, I returned them. In my eyes, this is a manufacturing defect that may affect the use of the knife in the future.
I decided to give Spyderco a chance one last time and bought Endela frn K390, because I really wanted a knife with this steel. And how surprised I was when I opened the knife with my thumb for the first time and felt something strange under my finger, something I will show in the photo.
Gentlemen, I'm giving up now, of the three knives I purchased, three of them have a manufacturing defect, after all, these are new knives from the store and this shouldn't be the case. How is this even possible…

Try tightening the body screws. I thought some of my Seki models had lock rock but it was because the body screws weren’t tight enough, none of the screws came with loctite on them.
Re: Seki City back lock quality in 2022?
I started buying Seki models in 2022, and they have all been perfect. One exception was a Delica Wharnie K390 that still had a burr, but was easily fixed. Mine is a sample of over 25 knives.

I’ve purchased many Delicas and Enduras since 2014. I say many because I’ve lost few or wanted backups.
Never had any quality issue and never broke any. I don’t baby my knives either. They are all hard use and sometimes even abused tools.

I have a 2021 POLICE™ 4 LIGHTWEIGHT K390, the action is buttery smooth out of the box, the blade is dead centered and it has no play.
I baby it, so i can't answer about hard usage scenarios.

We've seen lock slip, lock stick, and now lock chip.

I recently purchased a new Pacific Salt H2 SE. It's perfect. Lock up, centering, edge, all perfect. I'm still confident in back lock Seki Spydies.

I recently got me a pair of K390 Enduras and they're perfect. Spyderco/Seki-City are listening, no doubt.

My brand new XL Stretch Salt has gaps between the scales and lock
and the blade slightly rubs against the left scale.
On the bright side there is no bladeplay and that's more important to me so I haven't played with the pivot yet. I wouldn't consider this faulty quality but YMMV.
