What year did they start putting bug on blade?

#1

Post by zenheretic »

I'm trying to remember when the bug...er spyder was first put on the blade.

I'm currently discussing on a different medium, an old favorite Lil Temperance that shows a bug on blade and engraving for where it is made is all different than any other blade I've ever seen. So trying to figure it out.

That’s a good question. Unfortunately I do not know either. Hopefully some more knowledgeable folk chime in for your question.

I don't know for certain. The Boye dent appeared around 2001, and all the newer models in the 2006 catalog had the bug logos on the blades, although the older stock pictures do not. My C95 Manix doesn't have one but my C101 83mm Manix does. I would guess around 2004 for a start date on the rolling change.

That would put it as possible with those dates.

Never seen a Lil Temp with the bug before.

What steel does your L'il Temp have? They used 440V/S60V for most of the production. I think the bug went on when they changed to S30V.

Assuming yours is a 2003, that would align with my guess of 2004, last year of production, for adding the bug logo.

The top knife in the pic is the one that popped up on social media and sparked this question.

Yeah that is the one. Notice bug on blade and engraving is perpendicular to all the others. The engraving location really is odd. Spydernuts aren't fond of words down the middle of blade, otherwise Spyker would have been gangbusters.

I'm focused on bug because a better idea of when they started using it helps establish if it is a fake.

Yab's statement of bug in 2004 makes it a possibility. I think Lil temp was dc'd about 2003 so is in ballpark.

Interesting. No lanyard tube or steel marking.

If I had to guess I’d say an employee knife engraved at SFO

Spydiewiki says it was disco'd in 2004, I'm guessing only the very last run got the bug. I don't have a trailing point to compare with, but I can see where a debate about authenticity would crop up.

The original leaf lil temp is a beautiful hard use tool, I’d love if spyderco brought it back for a run

Image My C95 was a first run in 2004 and the C101 is a first run 2005 . I have to agree that the bug comment by Yab , I think it was a rolling change somewhere around 2005 or a bit later .MG2
