Many people are going to the movie theaters less which started with the Covid pandemic. I went to just two movies from the start of pandemic in March 2020 to December 2022. Both were to IMAX theaters to see “No Time to Die” and “Top Gun: Maverick”. In 2023 I went to the theaters 9 times and again mostly for IMAX.

Like “Matrix” in 1999 the Avatar movies have been unique experiences and a must see in IMAX theaters.

Quite a few other sci-fi movies in the 21st century well worth watching on the big screen:

  • Minority Report (2002)
  • Avatar (2009)
  • Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
  • Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
  • Dune (2021)
  • Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
  • Godzilla Minus One (2023)
  • I welcome dialog, as long as it remains cordial, constructive and is conducted in a civilized manner. - Titanic: Blood & Steel

Godzilla Minus One has reached the $100 million mark at the box office with U.S. accounting for 53% of that and Japan 37%. This is all from a slim budget of $15 million which means we’ll see more sequels like it.

The movie was one of just five recently nominated for an Oscar in Visual Effects.

There is a Black & White version in theaters now called Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color but apparently for just a week.

Dune: Part Two (2024) will be in theaters this Friday, March 1, 2024 and it was filmed for IMAX.

Christopher Nolan favorably compared it to The Empire Strikes Back (1980) which is arguably the best Star Wars movie.

Watched Dune: Part Two (2024) in an IMAX theater a few days ago. Top notch for action and story. The visuals and sound were great in the theater.
