Smock: new style pivot

#1

Post by sn0wman72 »

Had a new Smock land at my house today. It has the new style pivot. Compared to the original the screw is much larger, stands proud of the plane of the scales and has 5 "dots" around the Torx center. Not sure what to think....

Spyderco also highlighted the new pivot on their social media pages recently.

I too like how and how solid it looks.

Is the new pivot just aesthetic or does it serve some functional purpose?

Does make the smock look even more high end.

As a Smock fan I have to say it has a more refined look and fitting touch for the knife . I like it enough to get an exclusive if it had this style of pivot . MG2

Carrying my Smock today. Have to agree, I like this new pivot style much better. Had no idea they switched it up. Would that be a Spyderco decision, or Smock's?

Is the action any better/worse from the original Smock?

Sounds like current aftermarket (or factory) scales won't fit on this CQI'd version?

Yes appears that way . Scale makers will be scrambling for new generation of scales . Smock offerings are usually as far as I know only right handed . Probably will be same . Really reminds me of Stovepipe pivot . Dan

The new pivot was an in-house design that will be used on many future models.

Design aesthetic aside, titanium hardware makes me happy.

Action seems the same to me between the two versions

On one hand I can appreciate CQI. On the other hand these rolling changes lessen the value of the pre-CQI models.

Yep. Now plenty will sell their old Smock to get new.
:winking-tongue

Nah, I'm good with old pivot. What would be much more desired for me is better pocket clip, mounted closer to the end of the handle, without need to buy aftermarket dc pocket clips on ali.

Or it could actually increase the collector value because it’s the original version that is no longer being made. ;)

For example, a collector might be willing to pay a little bit extra for a BNIB S30V PM2 or Para 3 because they’ve since been replaced by S45VN.
