Could anyone tell me more about the Hummingbird?

#1

Post by Spyderchick »

I’m a fairly new Spyderco lady collector who has become obsessed with their mini knives.

Recently got a mini Police which I love!

My dream/grail knife is a Hummingbird/Spyderkey.

Does anyone have more information on these and where someone could get one?

Also, who else would love some mini necklace knife reissues? Me! :smiling-hearts

I love the Bug but would love a more fancy version as well for a pendant :O

Hi Spyderchick, Welcome to the forum. Sounds like the “Mini Police” model you got, is a model known as the “Rookie.” Glad to hear you’re liking it!

What I can tell you about the Hummingbird is that I need, at least, one as well! :winking-tongue

They’re highly collectible now, so you will have to search the secondary market to find one. Spyderco made the knife in a variety of different handle materials. There is a bit of information available on them via Spydiewiki but it’s limited - https://www.spydiewiki.com/index.php?ti ... mmingbird)

I would personally love to see some more functional necklace pendant knives or “jewelry knives.” I will join in the campaign for more. :respect :bug-red

Also, sometimes Santa Fe Stoneworks will offer the Bug, Honeybee, and Grasshopper with custom handles if you’re looking for something fancy to use as a Pendant sooner than later. They don’t currently have any available but it might be worth keeping an eye on. https://santafestoneworks.com/collectio ... collection

Thank you Mushroom! I actually have the mini Police as in “necklace size” one from late 90s I think? But I have my eye on a Rookie as well, I love it’s scalpel thinness!

Good idea about the Santa Fe stoneworks, they have really cool designs

Oh, wow! Even cooler than a Rookie!

That necklace size Police was also made as a Tie Clip. Although, I’m guessing from your username that neck ties aren't a frequent part of your wardrobe.

The Deacon has some Spyderkey info, and a few pics, on his personal website... http://paulberetta.com/index.htm (It doesn't let me link to the specific pages, so you'll have to browse through the column on the left)

I'm surprised we haven't seen some kind of Happy Thoughts/Spyderco pendant knife. Seems like a good idea to me.

I also “need” a Hummingbird/Spyderkey as I love taking pics of the actual bird and Nick suggested the model one time…I’d never heard of it until then…such a cool looking little guy but rare and very pricey…good luck with your search 👊

I started a thread on a new pendant knife a couple of years ago. I don't remember, but it seems that Sal said the early ones didn't sell.

Hi Spyderchick,

Welcome to our forum.

They sold OK, but they were very difficult to make. We made them in a number of handle scale materials. Only one maker made them and he's long since passed.

Sal, thank you for that info.

For now I will treasure my newly acquired mini mariner and mini police and keep an eye out for a hummingbird of my very own. Thank you and thank you to that maker, for all your amazing creations.

Edit: thanks to an amazing user on bf I now have my dream Spyderkey :D it is a work of art and so beautifully made, Sal!
