Thanks, did not know this guy/channel.

that's my bad. i was at another place in the video. it certainly doesn't sound like he's misspeaking here, as it wasn't a passing statement. interesting.
All good.

After musing a bit, I realize that Eric said "edge retention", not "wear resistance", which are usually used to mean the same thing, but don't necessarily. Edge retention is use-specific. If I'm cutting something with a high wear resistance steel and my edge chips off because of what/how I am cutting, the edge has not been retained. In this circumstance, edge retention is low.

Further discussion on this topic will be moved to Wartstein's thread, so as not to derail this one any further.

I was thinking about picking up a sage 5 recently but if they are releasing it in spy27, all the better.

I just can reiterate: I think this very modern steel (like in a lot of expertise and knowledge has been necessary to implement it in blades) fits the also very modern, linerless FRN and FRCP really well.

Both showcase the current "art of knife making" in a way.

Nothing against more common steels and G10 with liners - but that is something basically most companies can do (though Spyderco still does it better than most ;) ), while making light, but sturdy linerless handles out of FRN/FRCP is really kind of an "art" - just like implementing 15V in knives.

I kind of doubt you will see large models in this steel, since it is very difficult to grind and has low toughness. But anything can happen.

I think we'll end up seeing 15V Military 2's at one point. They're pushing out variations of that one at an unprecedented pace. I'm still not sure which version I want to pick up first.....leaning towards waiting on the crucarta.
May you find peace in this life and the next.

Same could be said of S110V, and that has been a mainstay in the Military for nearly a decade now.

Shawn's heat-treatment has proven to be very solid. I'm all in for a 15V Military 2.

I was referring to REX 121. It is much harder to work with.

My apologies. My point was that Spyderco doesn't seem to shy away from using low-toughness steels in larger models, which is what I thought you were illustrating in your response. S110V is hard to grind itself and Maxamet never made it to the larger models due to excessive warpage in heat-treatment, rather than its difficulty in grinding (of which it too, is). I'm sure they would offer REX 121 in a 4" model if they felt confident enough that they weren't trashing much of their return on that investment. Also, larger knives just aren't "in", anymore, which is a definite consideration in offering such an expensive piece. I do expect any models in REX 121 to be costly due to manufacture, regardless of size.

The size and weight of the G10 sprint models keeps me from carrying them more. Even at the same price, I’d take FRN/FRCP over G10.
