That ceramic rod is way harder than hardened steel.

Maybe you could also treat it like ceramic tile, score and snap it.

PS - I wasn’t drinking a whisky JSumm. I had no plans to enjoy a dram tonight. But then I saw your tag line, and now here I am mysteriously holding a glass containing a finger of Glenfiddich 18. It’s like some sort of dark magic 😏

Cheers! 🥃

I was just staring at my phone in utter puzzlement until I saw that at the end.

I'm empathetic. Since you've been trained in proper English, I'm certain there's a limit to the bad American grammar you can put up with ...up with which you can put.

Fortunately we English have a long and tapestried (in some cases literally) history of deciphering meaning - from trying to read a menu to order four beers and a packet of dry roasted peanuts in poorly accented Spanish on our holibobs to the Enigma Code, nothing is beyond our eventual kenning.

Having lived in and visited many places around the world, I have developed a useful system for garnering a glimmer of meaning from other nations that use their own language based on English - I just say to myself “how would Yoda arrange this sentence?”, and suddenly I can understand it. 🤷🏼‍♂️

It ended up being a whisky tour of Scotland, with a number of different drams being consumed. I woke up this morning and counted my blessings that I wasn’t hung over. My wife is Scottish (I’m English - we’re a culturally unlikely interracial marriage 😉) so I wonder if her natural alcohol tolerance somehow saved me by proximity from a day of feeling like a bag of spanners.

Anyhow, back to the point - I’m ordering several brown rods today so I’ve got a few spares to experiment with in the name of sharpening-mug based Science.

Hey Al,
I don't know if it would serve your purposes well or not, but Lansky (Lansky Spyder Knife Sharpener) does make a 4" long Spyderco Triangle grey-ish/brown-ish sharpening rod.

Oooh! Just out of brand loyalty I’ll try using Spyderco ones first, but I’ll keep that in mind if I fail gloriously 👍🏻

Depending on how clean the cut needs to be, I would try to score and snap them.

Rods and cups are ordered. I’ll post some pictures once they’re done/a heap of fragments and a glorious failure 👍🏻

Want to post an Update to my earlier post - I wrote that Lansky made a 4" pocket/dog bone style triangle sharpener, because I have several that I got years ago. Handy little things!
Well, I looked on-line after writing that, and found only 3" pocket/dog bone style triangle sharpeners... I wondered if it were maybe a misprint? Or is they were only counting the length between the rubber end caps? and that maybe it was still 4 inches with the rubber end caps removed?
So, I bought one to see for sure and NOPE. They are indeed only Three inches long now With the rubber end caps removed... :-( Not nearly as handy )-:

I would try a Dremel with a cut off disk. I mean the disk will cut hardened steel cleanly so I think it would work on a stone.
This :up-index-finger

You can buy diamond cutting wheels also for a Dremel.
