Heavy Duty 3D Printed Big Brown Scales for my BBB Mule

#1

Post by spiritbender »

I was not happy with many of the 3D printed scale designs I found online as it seemed many did not use the available holes on the tang to index on, or at least did not use many of them. I designed these to be as hard use ready as I can.

The next revision is going to have the protrusions extend into the opposite scales, to hopefully further increase toughness.

Uploading to printable shortly so others can use if they like.

Additionally, when you install them, it is designed to be a tight fit, but you should be able to get them on mostly by hand. You may need a clamp to force them on the last 10% but if they don’t fit at all, you may need to adjust the scale of your print as it may vary slightly from printer to printer.

Did you ever get these uploaded to Printables? I'm not currently seeing them if so, can you post a link?

spiritbender: Excellent design, kudos ;)
May just give this new technology a try, and your scales would be my first go.

Strong work. Agree, those scales will not be coming off accidentally anytime soon...with four bolts...! Looks like you did a good job matching the angle of the plunge line, always appreciated.

jumped into the deep end of 3D printing tks to OP, found a file that looks like an early version of OP scales.
printed a set of PLA+ scales using "fuzzy" surface texture in the slicer with following results :

and found a better filament for this project, AnyCubic standard PLA, printed it again with slicer "fuzzy" skin:
have some PETG that I'll try soon.
