Why both LC200N and Magnacut for Native Chief LW?

#1

Post by Jason Paul »

Hi All,

Honestly curious here. Any thoughts on why the new Reveal is offering the Native Chief LW in both LC200N and Magnacut, and it looks like for the same price? I think it's the same for the UKPK as well.

Seems there has to be a good reason. As hot as Magnacut is right now, and "Spyderco Approved" for the salt series, why would someone choose LC200N over Magnacut for the same price?

I can understand offering both H2 and LC200N. Some may want the hollow grind of H2, or the better(?) SE that H2 is supposed to have. But, I'm not sure what LC200N offers over Magnacut?

Why would someone choose LC200N over Magnacut at the same price? Maybe there's an obvious answer I'm just missing.

Thanks,
Jason

Corrosion resistance. Others can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the difference is Magacut is very stainless... but LC200N is almost corrosion proof. LC200N offers more extreme corrosion resistance. And H1/H2 even more than LC200N.

As you step down in corrosion resistance from H1/H2 you gain edge retention.

My guess, and im probably way off, is they offered both because the magnacut model will sell stupid fast. Buyers who want that model but don't really care if it's lc200n, can still go in for the win. Cheers

I forgot to mention they had a limited supply of magncut.

i would guess this as well. magnacut is still new and probably relatively hard to stock. lc200n is yesterday's salt steel, making it easy enough to pick up for those of us that know it's still great.

I may be completely off the mark, but I perceive Magnacut to have better edge retention long term whereas LC200N easily achieves exceptionally high levels of initial sharpness at low edge angles. I have and use both pretty much daily at work (usually as a pair) and this seems to be in keeping with my anecdotal experiences.

Basically LC200N would make a fantastic filleting knife, whereas Magnacut would make a fantastic utility knife. LC200N is easier to sharpen with basic kit too.

I will definitely continue to buy LC200N knives with very slim slicey blades even though I absolutely love Magnacut in use - they’re just different kettles of fish.

The more I think about it the more it seems that the only real similarity they have is their stainlessness.

I think the super stainless knives sell well. Spyderco has expanded their offerings as new steels emerge. This is all good for me, I'll buy both, and maybe more than 1 of each.

Just don't stop making them until I get mine. :smiling-cheeks

I don't know if there is much corrosion difference between LC200N and Mangacut. Time will tell from reports from users. From what others have told us ( I haven't tried), it seems like Magnacut sharpens up pretty nicely, but LC200N is really easy and some people may just enjoy that better. Color of course comes into play for some people that don't even consider steel.

Also, I doubt we will ever see H2 on the Native Chief. It is a Japanese steel and I don't see them shipping that over to Golden when they have a couple of domestic options. Though a HG Chief would be kinda cool.

From all I know LC is even tougher than MC.

How much or if at all one could make use of that when it comes to folders, I don´t know (since MC is really tough already going by its specs, clearly more than steels like VG10 or S35VN).

- At least in theory though this could mean that LC200N can take a more acute edge angle than MC.
- Combined with the better "sharpenability" this could be a win for LC, if people particularly want that two properties.

The gain in corrosion resistance with LC (at least going by Larrins charts, I´ll put the one for stainless steels below once more) looks to be really marginal.

Personally, I like LC, but am not the biggest fan of it,I prefer for example VG10.
So if I got a Salt Chief I´d probably go MC, just to try it out.

Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

It is because all of us should buy one of each, and compare them ourselves. It is our duty. We shouldn't be listening to others' narratives without our own experimentation.
We would like one in H1/H2 also, by the way.

I would think LC200N is more corrosion resistant than magnacut but I don’t know. MC should be great for 99% of our needs though

Funny - I started this thread right before leaving work; and shortly afterward I had the thought that maybe both are available because of production reasons. I wasn't able to get back on the forum until this morning, and see that mentioned a couple of times. That makes sense.

I also thought of the corrosion being better on LC200N, but figured since we're talking 10 vs. 9.5, that seems it would be a non-issue, but I guess it enough of a difference for some.

Funnily enough, I didn't even think about handle color, as obvious as it may be LOL.

Thanks for the replies so far!

Variety is the spice of life. I imagine the average knife user could hardly tell the difference in use between the two, unless you’re really going out of the way to be a steel comparison tester. I feel like you’d really have to go the lengths to notice the corrosion resistant property differences of spydercos salt steels.

I think that it might be to match people’s sharpening preferences. The Vanadium Carbide in Magna-Cut is harder for traditional ceramic and aliminum oxide waterstone and sharpeners to sharpen.

Bingo for me. I plan on the LC200 Chief. Easy to maintain on the sharpmaker.

It's one of the easiest steels to get extremely sharp that Spyderco offers. I've gotten some of my sharpest edges on my LC200N Pacific Salt.
