Trainers for Emerson opener knives
Trainers for Emerson opener knives
Any chance of again producing trainers for Enduras that have Emerson openers?
Or, maybe making them for the Endelas or Delicas with Emerson openers?

Re: Trainers for Emerson opener knives
i'd like one for a delica too.
i think the trainers suffer from two issues though. there just isn't a huge demand for them and they cost the same as the actual knife. if they were to cost less, i think people would be more willing to buy them and use them for training. i also suggested in the past that spyderco sell trainers and their live blade counterparts bundled at a discounted price for the pair. this would encourage buying the trainers and putting them to use.
still waiting for yojimbo trainers to restock as well.

Re: Trainers for Emerson opener knives
Once a model is discontinued, Spyderco doesn't bring it back in the same exact form. That doesn't bode well for Waved Delica and Endura Trainers. The only option I could see would be to bring them back with a different blade steel to differentiate them from the originals. To do that, the demand would have to be there--yet another challenge.
For now, the best solution is to add a 5x5 Combat Solutions "PickPocket" to make them Waved.
Stay safe,
Mike

Re: Trainers for Emerson opener knives
Thanks for the info. I was planning on getting a "Pickpocket" anyway.
And, since there hasn't been a trainer made for the Endela, I can still hope for that.

Re: Trainers for Emerson opener knives
I would hold out for used one rather then a pick pocket
The angles of the blade is different and opening from a draw would be slightly different

Thanks for the tip.
Re: Trainers for Emerson opener knives
If you don't mind the lock being different and just want to practice 'waving' a knife, the Kershaw/Emerson E-Train trainer is impossible to beat for the price. They were less than 30 last time I looked

Re: Trainers for Emerson opener knives
The emerson opener can fail if you don’t master the deployment. Using a different design might not carry over to a Spyderco version
.
Re: Trainers for Emerson opener knives
Nothing beats a trainer of the actual knife you're going to carry. That said I have a lot of waved knives, with back locks, cbbl's, frame locks, liner locks, different wave shapes, angles, sizes, etc.. there are some universal skills to be learned from any one of them. For 30 bucks the E-Train is a good addition to anyone's collection.

Agreed to an extent. But it’s like practicing a thumb stud vs spyder hole. There’s a noticeable difference. My emerson and my delica wave use similar techniques but are different. In my opinion I would search for a used emerson delica rather then a kershaw
Re: Trainers for Emerson opener knives
seeing spyderco's fb post today, combined with my carry of the waved delica, reminded me of how nice it would be to have a trainer version. i'm still waiting for a yojimbo trainer as well.
please, spyderco, bring back the trainers.

I'd like one, too. Hope you find one.
Re: Trainers for Emerson opener knives
Yes I need yojimbo trainer too. I know I’ve seen a regular delica trainer in stock. I haven’t seen any waves.

Re: Trainers for Emerson opener knives
You can get a regular Endura Trainer for about $95 and to that add a Pickpocket Exo-ccessory for $35.

Re: Trainers for Emerson opener knives
i'm a fan of the pickpocket on my yojimbo, but, in my experience, they don't work as well on the thinner blades. i really want a wave delica trainer.
i would think the wave delica is more likely to be carried for self defense than a standard delica. i wish spyderco would bring the trainers back for these.

Re: Trainers for Emerson opener knives
Hey, Ladybug93:
As I explained in my October 2023 post, once a knife is discontinued, Spyderco will not bring it back in the same exact form. We have had formal requests to bring back Waved Delica and Endura Trainers and turned them down for that reason. Also, in the grand scheme of things, knives have to sell well to remain in our active product line. Sadly, the number of people who actually train is a small minority of those who carry knives with the supposed intent of using them for self-defense. The quantities requested by the units who contacted us did not come close what's needed to justify a production run.
The last time we received a request from a special operations unit for Waved Endura Trainers, I "bent the rules" a bit. With their blessing, I commandeered their order of live-blade Waved Enduras and personally re-ground them into training-safe drones. I added a fob of red paracord to every one to identify them as trainers, put them back in the box, and shipped them to the unit. They issued them to their members and were very happy with the compromise.
"Droning" a live blade into a trainer takes skill and depends a lot on the grind of the blade. Fortunately, the thick, saber-ground blades of the Waved Enduras lent themselves well to this approach. The Waved Delicas would probably do the same. I know it's not the preferred solution, but short of Spyderco bringing back the Waved Trainers in a different steel, it's probably your best bet.
Stay safe,
Mike

Re: Trainers for Emerson opener knives
Michael if a person were to use a 3d printer to make a very basic trainer shaped like say a locked open Endura or Military or other model in say ABS or other polymer, for basic knife defense training, would that be okay and work out?
