Ugly knives
With all the distaste I see on forums for Spydercos unique looks, has anyone ever had someone tell them in person they thought their Spyderco they were using was weird or ugly?

YEP! Many times. Then I let them handle whichever knife it is, feel the ergos and my typically, pretty sharp edges. Still doesn't change their thoughts on the looks but most of the time people find them very comfortable in hand. Which, is pretty important!

Re: Ugly knives
Sure.
Though it should be said, the ones that really lay it out in clear terms are close friends that I hunt and shoot competitions with, so I sense a layer of teasing.
Beyond that little group of people, who has some level of interest in knives themselves and actually have some insight, most people never get to see my knives and from those who do, comments are all over the scale; expensive, dangerous, cool, fancy etc., but rarely do I hear weird or ugly mention from this crowd.
Keep in mind, I live in the land of Helle, Mora, Brusletto etc., beyond what they have in their kitchen, most people have only seen scandi fixed blades with birch handles. Everything else is weird and exotic, so I don't think it matter much if it's a Spyderco or a Benchmade I pull out. They're all different and new compared to what they're used to.

Yes. My contractors are quick to let me know when I'm carrying a Spyderco that offends their delicate aesthetic sensibilities.

Re: Ugly knives
My wife thinks they have animal like features. The thumbhole seems to remind people of eyes so the bladeshape looks like a beak of a bird.
I don't care how they look. Form follows function.

Re: Ugly knives
Nobody really sees my knives anymore, but when some people did, I never had anybody say they're ugly. One guy asked if my early Delica was legal, but that's about it.
'Ugly' is in the eye of the beholder. There are some people who consider CRK knives, in particular the plain-jane version of the Sebenza, to be ugly.
I think that most people who find Spyderco knives to be ugly tend to be knife people (as opposed to non-knife people) who are used to 'traditional' blade shapes, like the old-school clip point blades (Buck 110 style), or the blade patterns in old-school 'traditional' multi-bladed pocketknives.

Re: Ugly knives
Never had a comment from anyone else, but I think a bunch of them are ugly, most of them weird, and not many truly attractive. I definitely prefer the appearance of traditional folders to most Spydies. All that said, my Spydies outnumber the rest by at least 5-to-1, and that speaks volumes.

Re: Ugly knives
That’s what I was curious about. Someone who uses an old Case knife or something. Would they scoff at a Manix with its design? Guess most people who would even have heard of Spyderco would be more into the knife world than a random guy and be more apt to appreciate them on some level.James Y wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2023 2:05 pm

Re: Ugly knives
I've never had anyone blatantly call one of my Spydercos ugly, but I have had a few "oh, that's different.." or "what is that weird knife, ohhhh that's a Spyderco??" type comments.. If they end up handling one, they seem to "get it" when it comes to ergos, ease of opening with the thumb hole and whatnot, but I can't say that I've ever "converted" anyone into carrying a Spyderco. I tried pretty hard to get one of my uncles into Spydies.. he seemed receptive, but ultimately, I could never convince him to relinquish his coveted Kershaw Leek..
