The Spyker and the ATR.
The Spyker and the ATR.
The spyker is a bad idea and a bad knife. It was a reactionary model. it looks like a knock off model. That is part of the identity crisis that Spyderco is going through at the moment.
The ATR is a good idea but a bad knife. I would like to see Spyderco have another go at that idea.

Wow Sinbad, i can not speak about the Spyker because i don't have one, but IMHO the ATR is one of the better innovative designs that left the :spyder: factory the last few years.
It's a knife that didn't get enough coverage that it deserved, but i think you are way of course with your opinion about the ATR , both in Ti an Au

:spyder: Oh, poo poo, ya limey wank. You're obviously just jealous because you live in a country that doesn't allow you to own such wonderful knives. :spyder:

doesnt make much sense to post such negative things all the time, if you dont like spyderco and/or their product line, why would you bother posting here. you will get no further attention from me if all you intend to do is complain.

Hi Sinbad.
I'm sorry that you are disapointed by two knives that are generally considered top notch. I understand that the Spyker has an unusual appearance, but that's common for most spydies in ELU's eyes. And it's OK if you don't like it, it's your personal prefference and I do understand and respect it.
As for the ATR, when I first saw it I said the knife is ugly. I changed my mind later as I've seen it in some pics that did more justice to the poor knife. But I didn't thought it's bad. What's wrong with the ATR?

The mind commands the body and it obeys. The mind orders itself and meets resistance.

Most of the replies are childish. My thoughts are as valid as your thoughts.
My feedback is as important to spyderco as the praise some of you guys put all the time.
If I did not like Spyderco, I would not be here. The net is full of forums. If I did not believe in the spyderco brand as innovative and different, I would not be here.
If you think my criticism is objective, say so. If you want to go on a witch hunt, go. Does not bother me.
The Spyker's blade is not functional and hard to sharpen. not good for every day tasks. You might say it is a purpose specific knife but I don't think so. I think it was a bad idea. The three holes are ugly and gimmicky. The stripe on the handle is also ugly. It is the most UNspyderco knife so far. I think the handle shape is great though.
The ATR is meant to compete with upscale production and semi-customs. It ended up in the middle in the same league with the Benchade skirmish and the like. Such a pity. I think it was a good idea to discontinue it. I would like to see a better knife for the same market.
I have seen people in England wearing Spyderco caps. Great brand. Could be the next Coke.

My ATRs are even better than most upscale custom knives - they cut really well and have strong, reliable locks. That puts them ahead of most custom and small-shop production knives by lightyears.
Don't know about the SpyKer. It looks beautiful, but, Calypso Jr's and Meerkats (and, some day, Ayoobs) aside, I prefer tip-down carry and I'm an even bigger fan of ambidextrous pocket clips.

When you say the ATR is good, in what context are you saying it is good?
compared to what? Nothing is good or bad outside a context.
You will find that the most successful spyderco models are the simple designs. Less is more.
The ATR is not minimalist to say the least. Those holes in the handle, that clip. I don't think it comes together very well.

By "feedback" you mean vague words and a blanket statement along the lines of "I don't like it, get rid of it"
The recurve on blades has proven itself to be extremely functional and popular among knife enthusiasts, look at one of BMs most talked about models, the 710. There are also many people here who like the silverish twill g-10 in the handle, just because you think it is ugly does not mean it should be tossed in the garbage. A reason for the holes and you thinking it is the most UNspyderco knife would be because it is called a collaboration. Ken Onion dipped his hand in the creation of the knife, he's not the Spy, he is the Ker(shaw) in SpyKer.Sinbad wrote: The Spyker's blade is not functional and hard to sharpen. not good for every day tasks. Any reason why it is only middle-production? There is a reason why many call it the Salbenza. . . .SINBAD wrote:The ATR is meant to compete with upscale production and semi-customs. It's lock is stronger and more reliable than any custom or small-shop knife that cuts with similar ease. There are a few custom and small-shop knives with locks of similar strength and reliability, but one is an automatic/switchblade knife and the others will never cut as well as the ATR (though their locks may rival the Chinook I in strength).Sinbad wrote:When you say the ATR is good, in what context are you saying it is good?

Deacon, If you don't like my threads, don't open them.

When we talk about semi-customs, we are not only talking about cutting ability and lock stringth. Image. Who would this knife appeal to with those holes in the handle that have no function. I don't think it enhances grip, do you? Its supposed to make it look meaner. The people who want mean looking knives, will not pay that kind of money because they don't have it. :D
People who will pay top buck will want something simpler and more tasteful if you like.

Those holes in the blade and clip might look fancy to you , but they have a VERY important purpose! they are essential on a slick handle to switch the blade from heaven to earth grip, reliable, safely and fast! If this makes no sence to you the knife might be geared to people who use their knife for a different purpose then you.
Ever wondered why the yojimbo has a hole in the clip and a indentation in the middle of the handle?
