Extra Large Backlock Salt

#1

Post by SaltSerious »

I want to get a feel from the community for a minimum 4 inch cutting edge backlock salt series folder. Obviously would come in SE and PE. My vote would be Magnacut. I'm thinking that the upcoming Sequoia and Cliff Jumper would be great platforms. What say you?

I've been asking for this for about 15 years now.

My favorite designs are the Military, Police, Resilience, Manix XL etc.

But I carry Pacific Salts more than anything because they're salts. They're smaller than I prefer in a pocket knife. They are literally the smallest folders I buy.

Something like a Police Salt would be amazing. Or a brand new design with no choil like the Resilience.

Back lock is the best lock, so I'd welcome that lock type too.

The Pacifics are great, and I even prefer a ricasso over a choil, but I would like a 4 inch Salt with a lot of edge like a handle forward design/choilless design.

The Caribbean is the Salt with the most edge, and I adore mine, but it does not have a self close and is still a little under the 4 inch mark.

Ideally, I would have it 4 inches of edge for 4 inches of blade.

I am absolutely 100% in. A Stretch 2 XL Salt would be great, but a Resilience-like Salt would be even better. Linerless FRN. Upscale versions could be textured titanium framelock and linerless G-10 backlock.

+1 for me. I have large but not extra large hands, and a 4 inch knife is regular size for me. 3.5 is small. 4inch plus blade salt and backlock would be the ideal for me 2

i think the stretch 2 xl is going to be the first knife that comes close to this. the way spyderco designed it almost seems like they were planning ahead for it to be a salt. i'm kind of surprised it hasn't been released as part of the salt line by now.

it's not going to be a huge difference from the pacific though. i'd definitely prefer the ergonomics over the pacific salt. don't tell that to my beloved pac salt though.

Golden back locks are pretty bullet proof; however, when it comes to a larger or 4" Salt, I would welcome a design something along the lines of the SpydieChef regardless of type of action.

I am looking forward to this one. Really like the stretch 2xl lw, and a salt version would be very nice. Magnacut would be preferred, but understand the possibility of that happening soon are most likely very, very slim..

I feel that in a Salt Series knife it should be choiless. That way the fiberous materials do not get hung up.

Like LB said, The way the S2XL LW was designed as a linerless knife from the start, had salty intentions written all over it.
It’s been a while though, and with the release of the heavy weight Cru-wear even before a salt it all got a bit confusing. As such it’s nice to have Sal chime in and all but confirm it’s in their plans.

Regarding finger choils, my feelings towards them have been going back and forth over the years.
On small knives (chap and smaller) they obviously have their place, but for the longest time I could not wrap my head around the fact that they featured so frequently on larger knives.

With some more mileage and experience gained, I’m no longer as opposed to 50/50 choils on larger knives. I find that with folding knives, and especially salts which I tend to use on the most gooey stuff, I don’t want to use the blade all the way back to the handle anyway. Spyderco’s choils work very well as back stops compared to many other brands that simply do a cutout in the blade. Of course on back locks a ricasso would achieve the same effect, and which one I prefer depends somewhat on the style of knife and what it’s used for.

TLDR; finger choils on larger back locks doesn’t necessarily bother me anymore. I don’t want them to be overly large though. Most important to me on a large knife is that it makes good use of the available space in the handle. I’ve got medium sized hands so when I go up in knife size it’s only to get more blade length - so I obviously want all the blade length possible for the excess handle length I’m carrying.

I would really like to see a 4” salt knife. A Manix Xl lockback in Magnacut or a police would be great. A new model would be appreciated as well.

I also think that Spyderco is missing a midsized salt knife but the coming Manix salt lightweight might fill that gap. I definitely want one.
