Best way to darken wire clips?

#1

Post by Bolster »

What's the best way to make a Spyderco stainless steel wire clip dark grey, or preferably black? I have tried ferric chloride, and while it takes the clip from "smooth shiny bright" to "light-medium grey" and roughens the surface it a bit, I'd like to get my wire clips darker. (I know I can order black clips from Spyderco but I'd go broke ordering them for all my knives that need them.) TIA.

You can buy black ones on AliExpress for a few dollars a piece.

I am not really a fan of counterfeits, but a wire clip is probably no big deal.

Have you ever try to heat mod a satin clip ? I have done it on wire and regular clips . Wire is very easy and quick process . I will find some pics for you if interested . MG2

It’s a bent piece of wire, hardly “counterfeit”.

How about some secret sauce that's made specifically for the job? Both Birchwood Casey and Caswell make products for blackening stainless. I've not used these specific concoctions, but other products from both manufactures have proved satisfactory.

Yes. I find them to be the same as the OEM one.

Just trying to be mindful of the fact that I am a guest on Spyderco's message board, and show respect for that.

I don't know why I didn't think of Caswell. Of course they would have something. Birchwood I'm unaware of. Thanks for the lead, Rusty.
