Burning Man 2023 - A Mudders Dream
I attended sometime around 2001 and I think that I spent all of $200US for the bus trip in/out, water, and food. It's been 20yrs but I think that I brought my own single man tent, ski goggles, baklava to wrap around my head so that I could breathe, and extra water.
I was a system administrator at a biotech and went with our lead programmer who had been there before. I'm 63 now and with my health it would probably not be advisable to go. The heat and dust are epic!!!!
Never having been before or since, all that I can say is, I think that you have to go for multiple years to get the hang of it and plan to attended scheduled events otherwise it is pretty lame. There are things to see all over the Playa which is a large fenced in area in the desert...and the wind picks up small particles and bombards you 24x7.
People get a day to day events sheet and events go off with or without you. They do not wait and it is hard to get into some things. I think some things are by invitation only. I suppose the most important things to bring would be water, food, condoms and a watch with an alarm. I threw in condoms but you may not need them, it is NOT a huge sex party 24x7...again, events and planning are your friend if you're into that sort of thing.
Apparently it has rained at Burning Man and most cars are immobile, some are stuck in the Playa Mud, and they are asking people to remain stationary and NOT attempt to leave!
You can read about the issues here:

Bwahahahaha.
I can't help but get a laugh out of anybody stuck in desert muck. I lived in the east Valley (Mesa/Phoenix) in the early 70's and those weird floods from the mountains when it didn't even rain made such a mess in those days.
I now keep 4WD's with good tires at all times, but even 4WD's can get stuck.
I tend to avoid "festival" crowds, though...

It's pretty bad. I saw a couple of pictures of 4x4's stuck in mud up to their undercarriage.Murphy Slaw wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 5:16 amBwahahahaha.

We spend 3 months a year in mud like that in Tropical Northern Australia,s wet season. Not many Aussie 4x4s would have any issues getting out of that.
And rooftop tents are all the go here also.

Im a vegetarian as technically cows are made of grass and water.

Havin a winch is a very nice option. Always liked having one when I was younger. We always used it for pullin out big oaks to cut up for firewood though. Actually, I loved that winch. Kept me from carryin wood up and out of that holler

Just guessing, but I bet 60% of the attendees were from the Bay Area and their trucks are right off the showroom floor and the only time they ever went off roading was at Burning Man.
But yes, a truck without a winch isn't an off-roading truck. It's a grocery getter.

I never understood the burning man thing anyhow. When we used to have desert parties in Az. back in the 70's we just had a bon-fire. Regular ones.

Re: Burning Man 2023 - A Mudders Dream
Decades ago when I went, I read what it was about. There are a number of documents and websites if you need more detailed info than what I can give. From what I recall a group in the Bay Area had once a year blowouts at the beach and the group kept getting larger so it turned into Burning Man, the event.Murphy Slaw wrote: ↑Wed Sep 06, 2023 6:09 amI never understood the burning man thing anyhow.
