I drilled the holes on a drill press and tapped them by hand with a 2-56 tap using a pin vise. You just have to go slow and use a cutting lubricant.

So the tap was compatible with the original screws?

The stock clip screws are 2-56 thread. You just need to drill #51 size holes in the right spots, then thread them carefully by hand using a tap in a small pin vise (like a mini screwdriver). I drill and tap for one screw first, then use that to attach the clip. That lets you use the clip as a guide for the other holes.

— AWT aluminum linerless scales…..awesome…slimmer profile, lighter weight, deleted lanyard barrel in favor of a standoff, easier to disassemble and service the knife.

— brass ball cage….notably better purchase with jimping (scale contour also helps), better cosmetics

— Ceramic ball….changed out first, felt no effect but needed $8 peace of mind, LOL

— Medium spring….changed OEM spring out, obvious difference with medium spring….perfect tension for ease of manipulation without being too soft (also tried the “light” spring and it was too soft)

Yep, knife got >$300, but it runs perfect now….much more fun and sweet to put thru it’s paces 1-handed. I won’t do THAT again….but once was great‼️😅

I am for the most part content with most Spydies as they come from the factory, but I made an exception for the Manix. These AWT scales elevate the Manix to another level for me, with numerous improvements over stock. While I was in there I replaced the steel BB's with ceramics too. The springs are standard. The M4 has a MXG spoon clip and a brass cage.

I used to consider myself a Manix guy, before I fully came around to the PM2. At one point I had commissioned a CF LW, originally a Brown XHP exclusive:

Image

The whole process made me think that I should just do it myself next time, so I made a set of Cocobolo scales, which I all but finished because I couldn't decide if I wanted to drill them for a stock clip, or try to machine out some grooves for a wire clip. I plan to finish them for the 15v, but here's a teaser pic from 2017:

Image

Adding a metal cage to the knife didn't really excite me the way I hoped, but it does look pretty sweet IMO:

I'm really temped by the linerless scale mod as well, but I just never really carry a Manix anymore, other than a LW in one of my hiking kits.
How did you go about the carbon fiber lightweight Manix? That’s awesome!

I keep posting pics of my tip-down mod, because it's the only thing that makes it carryable to me. And I got a blurple Manix 2 coming next

Its not that difficult. Patience is what you need and do not forget to look what side of the cage is up and what is down (for the place the ball rests in ) and you will be alright. :winking-tongue

changing the cage out isn't that bad. you can just lift and rotate the scales and liners out of the way. to switch it out. changing out the scales is the hardest part of customizing the manix because the lanyard tube makes it very difficult to remove and replace scales.

I just noticed that on one of my Manix 2's that the lanyard tube is flared out at the end making it impossible for me to remove the liner (I'm replacing the lanyard tube with a Glow Rhino tritium plug) without damaging it or the liner itself. I'm getting frustrated. I've never run into this before. I have had them real tight, but never flared to the point that they cant be removed.

This product helps a lot with the lanyard tube removal.

gotta ask... how is the slotted cage? is there any advantage to it, or is this just a looks thing?

i'm already familiar with the flytanium cages... specifically asking about the slotted version. thanks!

I like it. It's comfortable for me. I can grab it easily and not slip off. It was primarily a looks thing for me. I think the 1 step down spring plays more of a factor tho.

all the aftermarket cages are for aesthetics. they don't change the function.
