Canvas micarta scales

Post by gull wing »

Do you like your micarta scales?
I recently installed a set of OD green canvas micarta scales on my Para 3, S110V. This baby is dear to me, so very comfortable, fills my hand, just grippy enough. Plus the canvas ages beautify.

Absolutely.

I do wish someone I would make some Shaman-style contoured Micarta scales for the Para family. I think Lotus did, but I don’t want to put imported scales on my PM2.

Sure, it would change the model a bit, but I would love it.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

I prefer micarta over G10 any day. Ripp's make nice ones that I had on a Para 3 at one point. I'm considering making my cruwear lil native a "crucarta" as well.

Some of my favorite knives in my collection are the ones with micarta...so yes, I love them! Such a nice feeling in hand, easy to clean if you feel the need, look great. What's not to like!?

I like the looks of my CruCarta PM2 scales, but I doubt Micarta will be a regular thing with the PM2.

But, I love contoured micarta scales on fixed blades - I've got several L.T. Wright knives with them and they feel and look great;however, this is my favorite. Feels fantasticly perfect in my hand:

I love micarta scales on pretty much everything! That's even what I made for my 15V mule. I've though about getting a set for my Maxamet PM2 but those dark gray G10 scales just look so right with that Maxamet, especially now that it's getting a nice dark cloudy patina on it.
Delica VG-10, Endura ZDP-189, Stretch 2 SS K390, Matriarch 2 VG-10, Para 3 LW BD1N, Para 2 CruCarta, Para 2 MaxaMet, Yojimbo 2 S30V, Manix 2 S30V, Knife Joy Manix 2 in 20CV, Teal Para 2 in S90V, Bade HQ Manix 2 Mint with M4, Blade HQ Shaman Micarta with M4, Mule in 15V, Delica in super blue/SUS410, Blade HQ Para 2 Natural Jade with satin M4, REC “Avocado” Para 2 204P, GPK White with DLC Rex 45, Knifejoy exclusive SpydieChef, Techno2, Caribbean sheepsfoot with dyed scales, cutlery shoppe orange/black DLC HXP wharncliffe Para 2, Endura VG10 SE wharncliffe project knife and a Bill Moran drop point in VG-10.

True. I wish they were available for the Native 5 Maxamet. But...the FRN makes it easier to just stick it in your pocket for whatever task comes up.

I'm working on scales for a few Mules, but I didn't get any Micarta - unconfidently still working only with maple.

This was my first attempt at making scales so I went with micarta because it's cheap and plentiful and I'm assuming more forgiving than wood. For the VERY limited tools I have (I have a mountain of automotive style tools but almost nothing for what that requires like a scroll saw, drill press and belt sander) I think it came out pretty good. They're comfortable and are about 99% symmetrical so I'm happy. It's not like it's a show knife or presentation grade or something, it's going to be a user knife. I managed to make them only using a bench vise, jig saw, angle grinder with flap discs, a palm sander and then hand sanding. I bought the slabs, barrel spacers and screws off knife maker.

I used to prefer linen micarta from an aesthetic viewpoint. But after handling enough micarta, it is the canvas micarta that quickly became my favorite.

I even started to make scales for the GB2 with micarta. For now I've only made green canvas micarta scales (2 sets), but in the next weeks I'll definitely make more !

Good grief! Looking good Robin!

I also like the looks of Linen Micarta better, but definitely prefer the feel of canvas. Seems like the perfect texture.
