Wharnie Endura K390. Where is the love?

#1

Post by Fireman »

The first time I held this knife I knew right away the great design and utility it offered. I got one but my question is, where is the love? I don’t see much talk about this extremely useful and well designed knife. I think this is such a sleeper hit of a knife. It’s so light that I barely notice when I carry an Endura. I have both regular and Wharnie. Who else has one and your thoughts on the Wharnie Endura?

The E4 is my favourite Spydie platform. I picked up the wharny in VG10 and it felt a bit big and unwieldy for some reason. So I decided to grab an Endela wharny in K390 AND IT RULES!!!

i've wanted this knife for a long time. i think for the longer blade, i would probably prefer some belly and might opt for the standard instead. before either, i'm going to get the leafjumper now though.

i have no doubt that the wharncliffe endura in k390 is a great knife. there are just so many competing options, especially for a collector/user like a lot of us that want to try new designs and new steels. if they ever make a pacific salt wharncliffe, i'll probably buy it immediately though.
keep your knife sharp and your focus sharper.

I've wanted one of these for a while as well, but between already having a PE Delica and PE P4 in K390, plus being on more of an SE kick lately, I haven't been able to justify the purchase. I can tell it would be an absolutely phenomenal user though - the cutting power of a wharny near the tip, plus K390's strength and wear resistance seems like it would be a great combo.

I have a drop point Endura, and recently got a wharnie Endela. Let me tell you I now understand why people love wharncliffes. It is a spectacular box shredder. Even more so for the thinner wharnie Delica. K390 is well proven to be excellent. I am a convert.

I don’t EDC it, but the Endela handles the recycling and is used daily.

I like longer blades, but I don’t need more blade length for this application probably because the wharcliffe blade shape is so efficient.

I prefer the smaller Delica wharncliffe, as I use it the same way I would a box cutter. If I need a longer wharnie, I reach for a Yojimbo 2.

....

A bit off topic, but I really wished the "middle ground" Endela would have gotten the blade stock thickness of the Delica (2.5) and not the Endura (3.0)
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Ah that would have made it even better, yeah. I have a wharnie Endela in the standard VG-10, which lives in my kitchen drawer to cut packaging and break down boxes, and it's fantastic but a thinner blade stock would have made it even slicier.

I may do a mirror polish on my wharn-Dura to keep the corrosion at bay since I do a lot of inside waistband carry.

I’ll echo Gernot.

Given the forces at work, I don’t think a Wharncliffe edge in an Endura is an optimal blade-length for utility cuts (SD is another matter). At that length, I want some curvature on the edge to relieve pressure on my wrist.

I’ve come to find the Lil’ Native wharnie to be ideal. Such an efficient cutter.

Is it possible to add the Emerson opener (wave) to a flat ground Endura 4 Wharncliffe?

Sign me up for 5 of them, if so.

*I am aware of the 5x5 pickpocket. I mean as part of the blade design.

I'm really not able to get all the way to the tip for really fine work with the Endura wharncliffe. I put my index finger on the spine as close to the tip as possible, but my middle finger is still on the handle. My hand just isn't big enough to do this with an Endura wharncliffe. I can sorta do it with an Endela wharncliffe. A Rockjumper or a Delica is AOK in this grip for me. This is yet another benefit of the handle forward design. I tend to prefer the normal blade with belly on the bigger knives and the wharncliffe on the smaller ones.

You would have to modify existing ones. You could do it yourself or pay someone to do it.

Thanks Fireman. I figured as much.

I am hoping to discover whether or not a flat-ground wharncliffe Endura 4 blade can be sold confidently with an Emerson opener design, as the saber-ground versions are.

If not, I wonder if the reason is, because it would terminally weaken the blade, or otherwise make it an ill-advised business venture.

Humbly, and with respect, can anyone advise?

Mike, Sal, etc?

Thanks!

I use the dragonfly version of this as a wire stripper sometimes.
Place any gauge of wire or coax against the grip, in the rear third.
Gently close blade. Closing spring force will hold blade against wire.
Gently spin knife around wire twice.

It requires a flat blade and a specific handle shape, so it might only be valid on the dragonfly. But I'm pretty sure that filing a v notch into the endura handle would have the same effect.
