Testing a new wharncliffe Endela against the Delica.

Image
Who won?
I'd say the Delica is a slightly better cutter with it's thinner blade (no surprise). I also prefer the looks. I'd say this is the one to get if you can have only one.

I like the longer handle (large hands) and longer blade of the Endela better for general cardboard and recycling duties. I bought this knife specifically for those tasks. It lives in the kitchen drawer, ready to destroy the next unsuspecting box. The Delica lives in the garage.

The finger cutouts on both handles are similar, and neither fit my hand well. I have to choke up far fowards to get 2 fingers in the large cutout, or far back to align with the cutouts. Puzzling, but I can work around it. My assumption is that the Rockjumper, with its Stretch-like handle, will fit my hand better.

Thanks for the comparison Brock O Lee, I kinda figured the Delica would come out on top slice wise…I had the same problem with the points on the handle on my Pacific so I sanded them down, ironically I don’t have the same issue with the Endela or Delica 🤔…I would like to get the Rockjumper cuz I absolutely love the handle on my Leafjumper and wharnies rock!!! 👊

Thanks for reminding me. Noticeably more comfortable now! I'll remove more material later if it keeps on bugging me. 👊

Is just a regular Covid style mask safe to use while sanding FRN, or should it be a higher quality mask? I think I'd like to sand my Delica, just to see if I like it.

I did not use a mask for the little bit of filing and sanding I did by hand. Likely a good idea for larger jobs with power tools when you get a lot of airborn dust.

You can do it underwater with some wet and dry paper to mitigate the issue, although it’s quite sloshy and a bit of a faff. You can gaffa tape a vacuum cleaner pipe next to your work space (it needs to be quite close) and switch it on while sanding too - that’s an old trick in the engine porting community, or you can spray it with suds (10-1 mix of water and dish detergent). Both work in a pinch on aluminium dust from cylinder heads if you can’t find your mask.

During a 32 hour Amateur Radio competition for ARRL Field Day I carried and used:

Spydiechef & Native 5 Salt LC200N for food prep
Sage 5 LW and an Enuff PE for everything else

I have a buddy who does amateur radio, but had no idea there were competitions. Are you testing a home built rig? Where does the competition come in?
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

The disc golf course I played today had some brush growing across a few of the paths between holes. Pacific Salt chopped the growth away.

I fill my utility sink up in the garage and shape my handles under water when I want to contour my scales. No issues with dust that way.

ARRL Field Day is the biggest annual event in North American Amateur Radio. Info here: https://www.arrl.org/field-day

The group I work with provides emergency communications for the City of Los Angeles thru the LAFD, so we use it mostly as an opportunity to test our gear and practice the skills we will need in a disaster.

It's a great day to test out new knives, too, because I'm stuck deployed outside the home for over 30 hours. and encounter more than the usual EDC tasks. The SpydieChef got its first use for me, as well as the Enuff. Paired them with the N5 & Sage 5 since I knew them well.

All performed beautifully, of course.

I don't specifically buy wet / dry sandpaper, I usually just grab whatevers cheapest at the hardware store when I re-stock. I use anything between 80-200 grit when I contour handles, like on my Native Chiefs. Seems multi grit packs are generally cheapest.

what is this heresy?! don't you know that only a fixed, scandi, carbon steel knife can make feathers?! :winking-tongue
keep your knife sharp and your focus sharper.
