Native 5 Salt SE or PE?

#1

Post by Sherer19 »

Hi everyone,
I know this so subjective but I’m on the fence about which Native 5 Salt to get? I want to get the LC200 but am on the fence. I have one Native 5 in a PE (Rex) already, and my other Salts happen to be SE (hawkbill lady, manbug, dragonfly)
Thanks everyone

I would try the PE since you have a variety of SE already . MG2

Gotta' disagree with MG2. :winking-tongue You need to balance your Native 5 collection by getting one in SE. I have five Native 5s: 2 PE (M4 & Maxamet), 2 SE (S35VN & Magnacut), and 1 CE (Never Summer LC200N).

Buy two….a serrated LC200N and a plain edge MagnaCut, then you’ll be Native set! ;)

SE.
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

I think SE shines in longer blades, so for a Native sized knife I'd be more inclined to go with PE.

And with Vivi's low grit sharpening technique, you'll have the best of both worlds.

I dunno I'd say the exact opposite, small blades benefit from serrations because they literally add edge length and cutting aggression. Small blades suffer from less space to make slicing motions, but serrations are slicing 99% of the time.

An easier comparison here is a PE Ladybug vs a SE Ladybug. The difference is huge.

But, I'm also biased so 🤷🏼‍♂️

Sorry vivi, I've got a 27/28 year old serrated Cricket that will absolutely disagree with you! ;)

Agree with this line of thinking. The SE lil native really shines. Compact blade with surprising cutting ability.

Given your other Salts, I'd get SE, then get something smaller in PE if you want.

After using SE edges and after learning to sharpen them on the sharpmaker, that is all I am going to buy in a spyderco!

Can someone tell me if the Native 5 Salt has titanium pocket clip? Just like the japan Salt models. Thanks

Same from my perspective. SE on a short blade really makes that short blade more capable.

Manbug Salt and Lil Native are the 2 shorter blades that I have preferred SE.
