Native 5 Salt CPM-Magnacut Plain Blade-any idea when shipping?

#1

Post by GeneH »

I've decided to give Spyderco and new steels a try so placed a pre-order for Native 5 Salt CPM-Magnacut Plain Blade at KnifeCenter. Any idea when Spyderco might start shipping to the vendors? You know how it goes - new toys never seem to arrive fast enough. ;)

All of my knives are on the low end of edge retention and really looking forward to a small EDC folder that I don't have to keep tweaking the edge. Nitro-V is in my latest small inexpensive folder and doesn't seem any better than AUS8, or at least the way I'm sharpening it.

Some online retailers have already received some and are currently in stock. I just purchased one from River's Edge Cutlery, not sure if they are still in stock or not but you can check them out. As far as Knifecenter pre-orders, I have only done that twice with them and its no telling how long it could take them to get it in and ship it out to you. If you are wanting it sooner rather than later I would check all the other reputable online dealers and you should be able to stumble across one in stock. If you do, then you can just cancel your pre-order.

I'm kinda out of touch as far as reputable online dealers. Most of my purchases have been kitchen cutlery through JKI in San Fransisco. Can you spot me dealers? (I should check the forum rules to see if that's acceptable here)

They are starting to disappear, but St. Nick's still has 10 of the plain edge. There is also the coolness factor of being able to easily dye the scales if you don't like yellow.

I got mine from edgeworks.com. Looks like they still have some in stock. It’s fast become my favorite Spyderco for daily use. Great ergos and steel. Can’t wait to take it to the lake this summer.

Welp! I just ordered one from St. Nicks. Talked to Alex and he instructed me put my desires for properly symmetrically ground blade in the order comments. The single review on their site wasn't too positive, but that's a sample size of 1, so not to significant. I get it that some knives come out of the factory just ... off. As long as I can correct any issues I'm good to go.

This will be the most expensive knife to date. Pretty stoked to try Magnacut with all the good press it has been getting.

Knifecenter pre-orders are a little notorious. The above suggestions of other retailers are good. You'll get the KC pre-order eventually, but when is a question nobody can answer.

Has anyone seen these show up on the SFO? I check in over there every so often and have yet to see the PE.

GPknives.com has them back in stock. Yes, a second batch. Very much contemplating cancelling my pre-order with KnifeCenter and doubt I'll ever do another with them.

I got tired of waiting for my PE MagnaCut N5 Salt preorder at Knife center after seeing shipments show up at other retailers a month or two ago so I cancelled and bought one from St Nick's. Might want to consider a similar course.

My 1st Spyderco should be at my door late Monday from St. Nick's. Pretty fast I'd say. Not thrilled at the lockback or yellow scales, but I like the shape and really after it for the Spyderco reputation for good heat treat and in particular Magnacut in the $150 price range. As long as I can open it with my thumb, on-handed I'll be good to go.

Side note on the yellow scales: at least it will be easier for me to see. I usually add a 6 inch blaze flag in the lanyard hole when hiking for fishing.

Yep, gave up on KnifeCenter today, cancelled and ordered it from GPknives. Should be here in a few days. They tend to be pretty quick.

1 PE Salt Magnacut has already arrived in the Twin Cities. Delivery tomorrow sometime. 😄 I hope it comes with a pretty good bevel and edge because I only have Chosera AO and really cheap diamond stones 240 - 1000. I do have diamond strop compound.

Thank you everyone. I have a very nice Salt 5 Magnacut PE in hand. It's really the best factory ground blade I've every had. Not a thing out of kilter on the whole knife. It's killing me not to take it to the stones 'cause that's what I like to do, but let's see how that factory bevel holds up.

I think you should be fine with those sharpening tools. I don't think MagnaCut is classified as a high carbide steel.
