Customer Support Question
Hello,
New to the forum. Been collecting Spyderco a for about 5 years now. I have spent a ridiculous amount of money lol, own about 15 knives and I am trying to pick up the 15V shaman and another discontinued knife which I won’t mention in case anyone tries to outbid me lol!
Anyways. I broke my Manix 2 LW maxamet scales. Basically, I was trying to do the screw conversion because I disliked the rivets. I like to regularly clean the knives I use a lot etc and the maxamet had a bit of rust forming inside where I couldn’t reach it.
It was one of my first knives and it is the knife I use most. I asked spyderco if I were to pay all the necessary fees and send the knife in, if they could just put new scales on it and put in the screws instead of the rivets.
They said they couldn’t do it because of CQI. I have spent over 5 grand trying on Spydercos and am buying the shaman 15V and my special discontinued knife lol….. so I don’t really want to frivolously spend money on another knife that already cost me $400. All the internal components, blade, etc are great still. Just need scales and screws.
Worst case Spyderco said they would ***** the blade and possibly give me 45% off of a new maxamet knife. However, from what I see the maxamet manix 2 are still riveted, and they are out of stock on the site. I also have sentimental value in my first spyderco and I don’t really want the blade notched…… plus there is no aftermarket scales that work for the manix 2 lightweight.
I have reached out to the warranty manager twice asking for a bone to be thrown my way….. haven’t heard back yet. Hopefully she will get back to me.
So that’s where I am at. Curious if anyone has advice? AWT said they are making aftermarket scales for the manix 2 LW but that could be a very long time before they are ready for purchase.
I know Sal kicks around the forums. I just don’t see the problem of me sending in the knife and them putting on scales and the screws that are on all the new manix 2 LW’s. I’m willing to pay the shipping, reassembly fees, and extra for the scales?????
Anyways that’s my issue.

Welcome to the forum!
I understand that you want to keep that trusty blade which has its story already, but if Spyderco says they can't give it new scales (quoting you) "because of cqi", then it is just what it is.
"CQI" could mean slight changes/improvements on the Inside of the knife that won't let your old blade fit perfectly anymore perhaps.
Honestly, I think 45% off a new Maxamet Manix when you basically destroyed your old one yourself is actually incredibly generous!
You could also get the cheapest LW version (BD1N and now with screws) and try a blade swap by yourself?
Anyway, hope it works out for you one way or another!

I’ve utterly destroyed one knife I remember — don’t do that again. Be happy when you’re given a mulligan but never expect one. Save the blade and parts salvaged and start over.

I think all Manix 2 blades are interchangeable. I would buy a cheap, maybe used, screw Manix 2 and put your blade in it.irontriangle wrote: ↑Fri Apr 21, 2023 1:19 pmHello,

I am in the other boat, I have a Manix 2 S30V that is 10 years old and I have sharpened way too much over the years. I would love to find a cheap new blade, whatever steel, to put in it.
Good luck.

Re: Customer Support Question
Welcome to the forum irontriangle. I'd take that 45 percent off and consider yourself lucky! That's very generous considering they don't have to offer you anything. I understand your position but take it as a lesson learned and move on. Cheers
Re: Customer Support Question
It's not like customer service are choosing to not help you, they can do it or they can't, simple as that. They can't just bang screws into a pinned handle, the molds are probably different. You're asking them to do custom work and then back it up with their warranty, it's never going to happen. I don't think there's a bone that can be thrown your way by Sal or anyone. This is like when mom says no so you go ask dad hoping for a yes lol. I think your best bet is to take that 45% off of a new one (which they are not at all obligated to offer you when this is not at all a warranty issues) and move on, maybe try some better rust prevention this time around. Or you can try to order custom scales for a LW and just deal with the wait, it's not the end of the world if you have 5 grand worth of Spyderco's to use in the meantime.

Re: Customer Support Question
Spyderco customer support offering anything to a customer who disassembled or broke anything is actually a step above what history shows you should expect. I agree with Albertaboyscott you should feel lucky they offered the coupon because it's unexpected and rare to get offered anything in your situation.

Re: Customer Support Question
As mentioned, a bone was already thrown. You're asking a lot, custom work on a knife you damaged, for a knife that is out of stock everywhere from a production facility that is still quite backlogged.
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

Re: Customer Support Question
I wasn’t asking to just bang screws in. I am pretty confident the blade and components would work in the CQI version. As a matter of fact, I’m gonna get a new one and be able to test it out for myself. Was just asking for the new scales and the screws, and I was willing to pay for it. I just don’t like wasting. Having a perfectly fine bald and components just sitting around. But that’s what I am going to do until an aftermarket scale comes out and then try that.Evil D wrote: ↑Sun Apr 23, 2023 5:39 amIt's not like customer service are choosing to not help you, they can do it or they can't, simple as that. Re: Customer Support Question
Yah. Well that is the plan. To purchase a new Manix. I get they don’t have to do anything……. But customer loyalty is important as well. Taking care of a customer goes a long way and I think they have done fine. I guess I just didn’t see the problem because I wasn’t asking custom work. I was just asking to be sent scales and screws and do it myself. I was willing to pay for all the components plus extra. I think it mainly comes down to a policy thing. They don’t want me to assemble a knife with an old blade, and new scales, and then potentially turn around and sell it to an unbeknownst person where it may not conform to the quality spyderco wants….. which I understand. Which is why they are very set on notching the blade so it is known that it has no resale value.
I was never going to sell it and don’t plan to sell any of my Spyderco knives but obviously they can’t just assume that.
Hopefully when I send it in they will still honour the 45% and I will just get a new maxamet LW and keep that old blade to turn into a good working knife if and when aftermarket scales come out.

Re: Customer Support Question
Spyderco called me back and the 45% is appreciated. I understand their policies now that they were explained a bit more. And as I said, this is why I’ll continue to support Spyderco. Freaking spend way to much lol but I really enjoy the knives. The thing is the best part for me is making them my own. That’s what I enjoy the most. I’m always trying to find cool custom scales, beads, coloured screws, etc. I hope the warranty department understands that this is a big part of the Spyderco community. This was a unique case and I honestly thought it wouldn’t be a problem. The scales breaking was kind of a freak accident. I won’t attempt anything as complicated again, because honestly 45% or not I’m disappointed that I broke one of my favourite and first knives.

Re: Customer Support Question
If you can get the backspacer/lock interface from a G10 model and a set of hardware, then you can use the linerless AWT aluminum or RSD titanium scales.
If you bought a cheap used one and took the backspacer out, theres certainly a market for the remaining parts so you'd be able to recoup some of your costs.
That's the route I'd go, personally.

Re: Customer Support Question
So you destroyed your own knife but you put the responsibility of replacing it on Spyderco?
I tend to agree with everyone else, they already “threw you a bone…” You're lucky that they’re going above and beyond their established warranty procedures to even offer you that. Beggars can’t be choosers.
Also, how has a Manix 2 LW cost you $400 already?

Yah good point man. I was thinking the exact same thing. I like the lightweight models a lot and the AWT scales being linerless kind of recreate that.Giygas wrote: ↑Sun Apr 23, 2023 9:53 amIf you can get the backspacer/lock interface from a G10 model and a set of hardware, then you can use the linerless AWT aluminum or RSD titanium scales.

Re: Customer Support Question
Just so everyone is clear. I didn’t put the responsibility on Spyderco….. or demand anything of Spyderco. Some of these responses are kinda dense.
This is my first warranty issue and I never thought before trying to mod my knife that it would be a big issue to get new scales.
I called them asking if I could purchase new scales and hardware. They said no. I asked if I could send the knife in and they could reassemble it and I would pay all the necessary charges and fees. They said no. Then I asked them what my options are and how to proceed forward. They, of their own volition, seeing I am a loyal customer and was honestly just trying to make the best of a poor choice, offered to notch the blade and give me 45% off a new knife of my choice.
And also. To the guy who wondered why a knife cost $400. You know the MSRP on Spydercos site for the Maxamet LW is $360 USD. Often dealers offer them below MSRP so that translates to $349.99 CAD or roughly $260 USD.

This does not appear to be a warranty issue. The warranty was voided when you modified the knife the way you did. The knife is no longer entitled to warranty coverage but Spyderco still offered you a generous discount on a replacement product.
I think it would have been wise to accept that offer because aside from that, your options are limited to aftermarket scales and hardware or buying another screw construction Manix to sacrifice for the scales and hardware. Finding OEM scales and screw construction hardware with no blade for sale might be difficult or time consuming, at the least.

Re: Customer Support Question
Well worst case is to buy another manix for the scales and hardware, then purchase a ready available after market scale for the Manix 2. Not the lightweight Manix 2. That is my last resort.
If spyderco is willing to do the 45% for a notch, which I will confirm before sending it. Then I’ll do that. If not, I’ll either wait for the AWT manix 2 LW scales or do the original manix swaparoo.

1) There's folks on here who'll drop 5K in a weekend on knives so not much of a flex.
2) You want them to build something that doesn't exist because you want it. Time to adjust your expectations and contact a 3rd party modder.
