ebay item removed?

#1

Post by Civilian »

I got an email about a Dyad I bid on saying it was removed. Is ebay cracking down on knives?

:The following listing:

2260634031 - MIB Spyderco C44 PS Dyad, Micarta Handle, Very Rare, NR

has been removed from eBay for violating eBay policy. Since this listing was removed, you are not required to complete the transaction. For a complete list of eBay’s policies, please visit:

Jeff, I think it's probably some other issue, otherwise darn near all the knife listings would be gone. I look at a LOT of Spydie auction listings on eBay, and do recall seeing a couple that kind of alluded that the seller had other knives they'd be willing to sell "off eBay". Wondering if this could be the one. Do recall thinking when I saw the one I'm referring to that if the eBay caught wind of it, they'd pull the listing. Do wish they'd crack down a bit harder on the keyword spammers, hate those darn "NOT Spyderco" listings.

Odd, Ebay permits sales of knives. Maybe there was something wrong with the seller?

From Ebay site

Knives
Knife listings are generally permitted on eBay, with certain exceptions:

Switchblade Knives
Switchblade knives with a blade over 2 inches are not permitted on eBay. A switchblade knife is defined as any knife that resembles a pocketknife with a blade that can be released automatically or by use of a trigger. Other names for switchblades include spring-blade knife, snap-blade knife, gravity knife, and butterfly knife.

Disguised Knives
Knives disguised to look like a harmless item are not permitted on eBay. These items include but are not limited to belt buckle knives, lipstick case knives, air gauge knives, and writing pen knives.

Sometimes things get through the ebay filter, or people don't complain.

CIVILIAN

I listed some Kershaw Speedsafe knives in the UK about six months ago and had them removed because they were assisted openers!

eBay would not listen to me when I tried to explain that these knives are perfectly legal to own in the UK. (Not, necessarily carry!) They are available from all of the normal outlets so why would eBay not allow me to sell them? Apart from which I had already sold about 20 of these knives over the preceding 18 months so why the sudden change?

They further stated that it was alright to sell assisted openers with a blade length not exceeding 2"! This is why Chives are still allowed. It looks like they are treating assisted openers like switch blades and have made up their own rules for the UK market ignoring UK law. At the same time someone complained about me listing a Camillus CUDA with a sliding button opener (not assisted opener) and it was removed! They again stated that this type of knife contravened their listing policy.

They strike me as the type of organisation who is quite happy to make money out of their customers but when it comes to being realistic about their rules, they don’t want to know. They were not even prepared to enter into discussion about the knives and were dismissive telling me that if I ever tried to list prohibited items again I would face a ban!

I don’t want to complain but have seen Pakistan made and “fantasy” knives sell in the UK on eBay with knuckle “guards” in the form of blades, multiple blades and even butterfly knives slip through now and then. Some standardisation of the rules might be in order!

Ebay only restricts knives that violate California law. Although they don't police that very well. There are tons of junk switchblades that aren't California legal sold on there.

This is because Ebay is a California company and some over ambitious Police Officer contacted them and told them they were in violation of the switchblade law.

Even if switchblade or assisted opening knives are legal in the UK it is still illegal for Ebay to offer them for sale accoring to California law (section 653k of the penal code).

I hope that clears up some of the Ebay mystery.

I appreciate your comments and I understand that eBay are governed by the California knife laws which are very restrictive. That being the case, how is it that they still allow large numbers of Kershaw assisted openers the Boa, Blackout, Blur, Avalanche and Scallion to be sold on eBay in the U.S.A? SOG Flash knives are also common place.

It appears that they have one set of rules for one group of users and another for others. My question to them was, if a UK retailer is allowed to sell these knives on the high street, and traders in the U.S.A are permitted to sell them on eBay, why can’t I? If a rule is going to be applied, be it right or wrong, shouldn’t it apply to everyone?

They were not prepared to answer my question.

There is no rhyme or reason for what Ebay decides to pull. If you do a search for switchblade on it now you will get alot of hits. Most of them are not "California" legal.

I asked an Ebay investigator about it and he could only say that "another division" handles rule violations.

I sell on eBay and am a Powerseller in good standing. They took down an auction for a Spyderfly last week because I told the truth about the blade length. eBay considers butterfly knives under their switchblade rule and the blade can't exceed 2 inches. The first Fly got through - it sold with "Buy it Now" in 18 minutes with 14 looks, pretty hot item, huh? The second one went on bids to $84 + S&H in 22 hours before they yanked it. You can sell all the $2 Chinese crap you want, so the kids in trenchcoats and green hair will have something to flash at the Mall Security Guard but you can't sell a quality knife whose price would almost certainly demand a reposible owner. Of course, eBay knows this now and has "Promised to look into it". Yea, right.

I figure on anything like that with ebay,I will just lie about it.What are they going to do,send the ebay police after you.
Last thing I sold that was illegal on ebay was a hi cap mag.I just list it as a 10 rd and said with a big wink, wink that it was 3 times better than a standard 10 rd.
Doing things like that on Ebay doesn't bother me at all because they don't even know thier own rules.
They will not let you sell animal parts on ebay but did you ever see the tv ad where the little bald guy is danceing around and says you can buy things like this and holds up a stuffed deer head?Hey that not allowed on ebay!

It's amazing what gets pulled and what doesn't. Among the Illegal ones: Rob Dalton Asassin, DKW Sandshark, Microtech Halo/Scarab/Nemisis, ect. You see TONS of those (Espically the Microtechs and their clones) for sale on ebay.

Oh, and anyone who wants to buy me any of the above is cool by me.

The eBay thing stinks mainly because the people they have watching for unallowable items don't know what they are looking at. Also because I have money tied up in Spyderflys that I can't get back until I can trade them or find someone local to buy them. There is a lot of junk sold by ham & eggers and a lot of BM's sold by folks who just lie about blade lengths. This goes for butterflys and autos. Anyway, as soon as my Hindu gets finished I'll be full bore e-store and can start moving away from eBay. I'll try to keep everyone posted.

EBAY has really been irritating me lately.

Some non knife related items have been coming up as being blocked in US.

Things like WWII memorabilia, military books / manuals. Even some posters. Very strange and irritating.

Actually, I wanted to buy a Case V42 knife (not an original) and It was blocked. All I can figure out is it had "military" and "WWII" in the listing.
