What you don't like about spyderco knives?
Re: What you don't like about spyderco knives?
Nicer fit and finish for their Chinese models (Byrd line included) - I mean check out a civivi next to a Byrd and one feels substantially better
Spyderco started out as a sharpening company - would like to see some resin/metallic bonded stones. Would also like to see some more options for the sharp maker

Yeah, this is a big problem in the knife world. So many knives have blades thick enough to survive the apocalypse, while most people aren't going to abuse their high end knives. This is particularly egregious in small knives. I'm not doing heavy duty work with a 2.5" blade so it really doesn't need to be thicker than a chaparral.Coastal wrote: Blade thickness is my biggest gripe. If it were up to me, I would reduce the stock thickness of every 3mm blade to 2.5, and every 4mm blade to 3.
+1 on this. Finger being right next to the edge is ideal for ergonomics. Seems like we'll get more of this, looking at the rockjumper.
I totally agree with this. I don't mind when the lanyard hole just exists and doesn't influence a design, but there are some designs like the para 3 where it affects clip position and may have even lengthened the handle.jmj3esq wrote: 2. I do not share Spyderco's enthusiasm for the priority of the lanyard hole. It seems like they go out of their way to make room for a that dang hole while almost disregarding the more important part, the clip.

Honest answer.
From a design point of view, I wish many of their models had a more pronounced forward finger guard on the handle, in terms of your hand slipping forward.

There was the "Salbenza".

I love the reveals. I hate the reveals. As Tom Petty says, the waiting is the hardest part, and waiting from the time the show us something cool till the time we can actually buy it is a pain in the A$$.
Re: What you don't like about spyderco knives?
Too thick behind the edge.
I don't buy the "it's to reduce warranty claims from rough users and it's hard to achieve in a production setting" etc. All the high end Chinese companies can do it and sell an awful lot of knives to buyers probably less knowledgeable than Spyderco customers. Excessive thickness behind the edge compromises performance more than thick blade stock does and I think Spyderco should be aiming for .01" bte instead of .02"+. In my experience .01" does not compromise durability.

To the people who don't like the prices of Spyderco's. Please go check out prices on a Medford, Protech, or Microtech, etc. The quality, price, and value of a Spyderco is much greater, IMO. Nowhere can you get as wide of a range of blade steels and handle/scale options as you can find at Spyderco. I love that you can buy a nice full size Spyderco knife for as low as $60 or for more than $700-$800. There is something for everyone at Spyderco.
Re: What you don't like about spyderco knives?
The tips of their self defense purposed knives are too thin. Others may disagree, or see that as a feature not a flaw. But king for a day and I'd beef up the tips. For reference I'd make them more on par with an Emerson tip.

Re: What you don't like about spyderco knives?
There are plenty of Spydercos that don't appeal to me. But there are a bunch of Spydercos I DO like. It's awesome that they make dozens of models in different steels. There's something for everyone. It's like a taco bar. Some people like carnitas. Others prefer carne asada. And some even like portobello tacos. Those portobello folks, though... they're probably the type who carry Benchmade knives.

Now that I think about it, there is ONE thing that Spyderco does badly. The clip screws on the Dragonfly are dreadfully malformed. It seems incongruous that a group of folks who are OCD about aesthetics and quality would let misshapen screws leave the factory. Or maybe I'm the one who is OCD and gets wound up over something that others consider inconsequential. It wouldn't even be so bad, except that sticking your fancy Torx bit into a deformed screw will quickly ruin the tool.

I don't like that the new models are hard to find outside of the USA
They take so long to trickle down to foreign distributors

Wire clips.
Except on my UKPK Salt. I like it on that particular model.

What, really? I love wire clips. They're sturdy and nearly disappear from view. Why don't you like?

Re: What you don't like about spyderco knives?
Overall, I like my Spydies, but dislike the square-ish handles on some models (that's largely why I moved my PM2 along). On some, I also find the jimping and inside edges of the handle uncomfortable (I'm thinking of the Manix lightweight).

They still take to long to get into stores after their release date.

Here’s the first one that came to my mind
The calypso/Caly series is the most excellent pattern of designs in the category of folding locking edc knives. But they’ve been very highly limited in production for too long.

Re: What you don't like about spyderco knives?
I guess I'm pretty easy to please. I have a whole bunch of different models and don't really have any issues with any of them. They all seem to fit my hands pretty well, so I don't feel like they need any extra chamfering etc. In fact I kind of like how the edges on some of the G10 models aren't radiused a lot and don't feel like they want to twist in hard cut.
I guess the only thing I could really think of is I don't like how the paint comes off the hour glass clips. My Bradley folders seem like they have a different coating because none of those show any wear. I'd like to see all the clips done the same way
Also, some of my favorite models are collaboration models. I'd like to see some more collabs

Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most!
Re: What you don't like about spyderco knives?
I don't like the wire clips because they're kinda fragile. When you snag them on something and they get bent up it kicks the knife out of your pocket until you find an aftermarket replacement.
I think spyderholes on some models like the Para2 grew a little too large. I like to see a little more steel meat around a sypderhole. Not a big deal because they seem to do the job just fine.
Lanyard holes that put the clip in the wrong spot on a handle are mind blowing.

The Ti Millie?
Secondary prices are too much for me, but man is that a sweet knife.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.
