Isn't it the mail service that reads your mails and send ads according to the content it finds there? <img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

1: yes, it looks for keywords in your email, and includes ads accordingly...
2: it's in beta testing still. invites are given to current users to get more ppl in, rather than open it up right away and overloading it. I have given away 3-4 single ones and then I got a bundle of 6 invites on monday.
