Hey Doc,

All great information. We need to talk about your creating manual?

I'm currently the hunt for a new assistant. Once I find one, I'll contact some of the current makers suggested and see if I can get a "Branded" version.

sal
I sent you an email.

The manual sounds like a great idea.
Hi Doc,

Where did you send the email?

sal
Through the link in your profile on this forum like before. If I should send to another address, please send me a message or email.

Also, a razor maker sent you an email.

Now, the question is, what blade style? Round point (best all around and for beginners), pointed AKA American point, Spanish point, modified Spanish point (I like this), barber's point (dangerous), or French point?

I'll take some pictures of some of mine and post them.

If priced reasonable, I’d buy one.

Thanks Mike!

Big fan of the Yojimbo! I should get a snaggletooth from 5x5 combat solutions for it. Wish I could find a Ronin or Ronin2.

Take care :)

I can't believe it's taken me this long to realise this but using disposable razors gave me the habit of pushing the razor into my skin lightly when shaving. It's completely unnecessary with a straight razor and makes it a lot less comfortable.

You meant the straight razor is a lot less uncomfortable?

Using those disposable razors really forces bad shaving habits on people in order to make them work properly.

Here is a video showing a Henson razor versus one of those multiblade monstrosities. You can see that all of the blades don't actually do anything but butcher your face. They don't cut at all.

I meant that pushing the razor into my skin made it a lot less comfortable. With the razor just gliding across my skin, it doesn't even feel like it's cutting. I'm too used to disposables where it feels like the hair's getting yanked out.

They might be getting yanked out. Those multi blade razors claim to pull the hair out and then cut it so that it is below the surface. That is a recipe for ingrown hairs.

A straight razor is a straight shave. It cuts close to the skin, not under it. You can get a baby butt smooth shave very easily and no ingrown hairs or shaving bumps.

My Christmas Day shave. It was smooth, comfortable, and no irritation or weepers. I only did two passes and didn't have to do any buffing. Very nice shave. This is why we need a Spyderco Straight Razor!

I’ve never shaved with a straight razor but if Spyderco made one I would be willing to give it a shot.

Get the least expensive 5/8 Ralf Aust or Thiers Issard from The Invisible Edge in the UK. It will come shave ready and inspected. Try it, you'll love it.

You might find a good Filarmonica (Spanish company) straight razor and then send it to a professional razor honer and have a real gem, too.

There is something beautiful about using a straight razor that one doesn't get with other forms of shaving. There is beauty in the symbiosis between the shaver and the razor. There is beauty in the thoughtful strokes needed to take the beard down and make the face as smooth as the day one was born. There is beauty in the precision in all that goes into the shave. There is beauty in the precision of the making of the razor and in the scale choice. There is something marvelous in taking the steel to flesh and in its purest form is like a ballet, where movement and grace flow together with the hand and the blade. There is nothing like it.

Hi @Sal,

Have you thought about a name?

"I was staying in a camper and the first day of the seminar was also the first time I shaved with a straight razor. I couldn't find a teacher from whom to learn the art, as most barbers were using "switch-blades" for their straight razors. I actually pulled out my microscope and experimented for several months learning how to sharpen and strop a razor and experimented to see what would work best.

I boiled up a pan of water, lathered up and shaved. Obviously, I made a number of mistakes and with little pieces of paper stuck to my face, I attended the first day of the seminar. I'll never forget the line, but one of the attendees from Canada said; "What choo been doing sal, you look like you been trying to shove butter up a wild cat's *** with a hot ice pick"."

Hahahaha! Maybe the Wild Cat?
