I'll sign on for anything that's tip up. A para with tip up could be pretty cool. Tip down is why I don't have a para or millie.

and if this can't be done a good substitute may be a Ocalot in a small run with green G10,that way the only change that would need to be made is G10 color and engraveing.

I'm for the Delica in OD Green G10.
Right size, Very cool color, & I LOVE VG-10 steel.

The Ocalot would be a very close 2nd. ;)

Well its got to be something Sal is willing to do.
The G10 Delica in ahead by far and the color is a tie between green and blue.
A dark blue or Temp green G10 Delica would be fine by me.

I would like a rescue model with serrated sheepfoot( like the Atlantic) blade in H1 FRN handle with adjustable pivot.
Colour maybe bordeaux red.

A Few Thoughts...

Post by Hannibal Lecter »

Good day, all.

I have largely stayed out of the fracas where the forum knife is concerned, but I do have a few thoughts I would like to share.

A forum Delica, the Delica being the most popular Spydie ever, would be a nice choice. Possibly in an unusual color of FRN. It would also have the distinct advantage of being inexpensive and having no tooling costs incurred.

A forum Kopa would also be an option, as it is already a limited-run knife and the tooling is in place. Just change the scales.

The easier we make this process on Sal and Spyderco, the more likely it is to happen. Additionally, the more likely it is to happen again in the future... :D

I think the delica is the best bet. We have a few people including myself who just do not like the native.

But I have never heard of somebody not liking the delica. Since it is the Most popular spyderco knive ever, i am suprised it has not been a forum knife yet.

It just seems like a knife everybody is going to buy.

Black Blade, OD-Green G-10 handle, with a Black 3 screw clip like the Military or Para, just smaller and a Adjustable Pivot if possible. Also id like to see the Lock and all screws as well as the clip, coated with the same DLC as the Blade itself.

Also maybe somthing that wouldincrease the selling point if the knife was to stay FRN, is to get the 3d scaled like on the calypso jr, onto the delica.

Why make the Delica the forum model when it is on the eve of the new re-designed one? I'd say make the re-designed one the Forum Knife if we want a Delica.

As for this black coated blade and OD handles, as you said some people don't like the Native, but I'd say even more don't like the whole mall ninja thing. I personally think it is silly to have a coating unless you are active in the military or you have some non-stainless steel. I can understand why they are marketed to normal civilians though, I thought they were cool when I was 12 and am guilty of buying a POS black blade.

I have tried to make this point before. I had the opportunity to handle the new FRN Delica and Endura at Blade this year. There are several major improvements. I think making the new Delica a forum knife on it's introduction would be a great way to celebrate the redesign of this perennial best seller.

It might be a good idea to make a "Forum Model Poll Part 2" to address some of the models that aren't in this one.

Where's the Para-Military? That seems like a fine option for an upper price golden made forum model

Same with the Manix and the Minix

The Swick should be included as a lower price golden made model. I can't think of another lower priced Golden model.

Wasn't the military done in the past, same with the Native?

Why not start fresh with a model that hasn't been done yet.

The kopa would be nice, but at a 500 to 600 piece run, I don't really think it is practical. There are already several variations of the Kopa coming out. Spyderco is going to have a hard enough time selling those without having to worry about another forum model run.

The only practical golden models I see are - para-mil, manix, minix, swick

The Dodo, Yojimbo, and Chinook do not share the versatility of the above models and are marketed as more specialized knives.

If we want to keep the blade length below 3 then the field shrinks even more- Para-Military, Swick

Seki is a little more flexible but I'm not sure Seki should be undertaken at all unless an Endurra or Delica is done. A G-10 Delica or Endura might be the only seki model able to sell 500 pieces.

And what about the Salt? Am I the only one who thinks a forum Salt 1 with a titanium bug inlay would be a nice, cost effective forum model? Maybe something engraved on the bug? Uncoated Ti clip, H1 steel, Glow in the dark orange FRN? come on baby.

I'll vote Delica. I'd really like a Kopa Forum knife although that one might get a little costly.

I don't know why the Mini-Manix (or minix) keeps getting included - not just by you Bryan ;) . No release date has been announced and other models keep having their release dates delayed. Personally, I think that including the Mini-Manix in the discussion just makes it needlessly more complicated.

On the other hand, Sal must have a reason for his suggestions that a SWICK or Native are possible. He knows which models are at what stages of development (or redevelopment). While he is concerned with giving consumers what they want, we also have to be receptive to what Spyderco can provide in a rather short timeframe.

I know that the Delica III (or whatever) is to be released next year, and I'm the most excited one that's expecting it, but I don't think it would be wise to pick it as a Forum knife. Because the new model will become the regular Delica soon.
I think that the actual model, with G-10 scales (prefferably dark blue) :D would do nicely for a Forum knife. The tooling costs are practically zero, since there was the CF Delica made before and you only need to replace CF with G-10.

However, I'd suggest making it linerless and with a wireclip (a la UKPK). And this is because some of the Forumites are lefties. As you know, the CF Delica had a modified clip, which is NOT ambidextrous. Not to mention that loosing the steel liner would lower the price point (and the knife would be lighter).

What about fitting a Cobra Hood? It would be indeed a novelty factor for the Delica. And chances are that it would be the only Delica with a Cobra hood.

I think the hood is awesome! It does have many detractors, though!
