yeah. i don't take my knives apart often, but i like that i can if i need to. i suppose that's the same as an engine? i'm not sure what the objection is here.

Re: Manix2 lwt Still Pinned
I want to take the manix LW apart to replace the plastic ball cage with a titanium one. Plus, I like taking my knives apart and cleaning or just looking at the insides to examine how it all works. It’s an added bonus, not something needed. I’ve even broken a few parts in the process, but that’s a price I’m willing to pay to tinker with my knives.
Re: Manix2 lwt Still Pinned
Looks like my timing was off (not for the first time or the last) got the SPY27 version a couple months ago from DLT and it's pinned. Still love the knife but yes there's a bit of melancholy about the timing. Holding out for the salt version now.

Depends on how well you maintain that engine. Change oil and fluids regularly the less chance it needs taken apart.yablanowitz wrote: ↑Fri Aug 19, 2022 7:36 pmJust because you *can* take something apart doesn't make it an ideal practice, either. The fact that a 50 year old, pinned tool steel knife can be still in perfect condition, is a nice reminder that we sometimes worry too much about these things.
However, while that may often be the case, something like the Manix 2 LW could be put into wildly different use than a classic slip joint, but if the knife isn’t easy serviceable, that could hold you back from using it to its full potential.
I almost bought the pinned S110V some time back, so it’s not a total show stopper for me, but hit the breaks as soon as I saw the slightest possibility of a screwed magnacut, as that would be an even better fit for my use.

I would guess that statistically the G10 Manixes have "better" action (like in more "drop shutty") than the FRCP versions indeed - but I figure just by tendency, not as a "rule" - ?
At least I can recall one or two comparisons done by folks who had an LW and a G10 Manix, and a pro of the LW they pointed out was actually the smoother action of the LW - and two of the three Manix LW I owned / own have perfect action..
This is not a "fanboyish" defence of the LW by any means - I just think that there are a lot of pieces out there with perfect action too (though I personally would not need a totally free falling action on a Manix -. or even prefer an a bit "stiffer" one. This is probably due to the ways I usually close a CBBL: Either by pulling the locktab just with the thumb and guide the blade to close with the index finger in the opening hole, or let the choil drop on my middle finger with a little wrist flick (like people do with a backlock (but then on the index finger))

Re: Manix2 lwt Still Pinned
I have an early S110V LW. The pinned construction held up perfectly over the years, and it still has a fantastic action.
That said, I prefer screw construction because it gives you a few options to fine-tune or deep clean or fix if you ever need to. I'll pick up a CQI version one of these days.

Re: Manix2 lwt Still Pinned
there's nothing wrong with the action of my lw. it's very easy to open and close. it just requires the slightest flick of the wrist to close it, whereas the g10 version drops freely as soon as i disengage the lock. it's a very small difference, but it makes the g10 slightly more enjoyable to use. couple that with the ti ball cage that i like better and the textured micarta scales, and it's an all-around better knife for me. they're still both great.
when i asked for years for a manix salt, i really wanted a g10 version. however i also said that a lw salt would be fine without screws. i'm really glad that we're getting a lw version with screws though. i won't need to take it apart, but i will be able to replace the plastic ball cage for titanium and that will be cool. i'll also be able to try a blade swap, which i hope works out. there are lots of good reasons to want screws over pins and they aren't all about cleaning the knife.

Re: Manix2 lwt Still Pinned
Glad to hear it’s moving to screw-together vs. pinned. It always bugged me that the LWT version was pinned. I know pinned is fine, but it just didn’t seem to “fit in” on a lightweight model. (Just a personal preference, really).

Any update to the Maxamet one? I guess I could get a pinned one and just use compressed air and oil to keep the pivot rust free
Re: Manix2 lwt Still Pinned
For backpacking, I still plan on taking one of my stainless pinned Manix LWs. I think pinned construction is a bit safer choice for the backcountry.

you think screws with thread locker are not secure enough?
i know some people have had screws back themselves out of their knives. i think the only one i've had that issue with is my df2 salt (and my balisong trainers, of course). is it just that it's a possibility that you're uncomfortable with, or does this happen to you regularly? not trying to be dismissive or contrarian... i'm legitimately curious. it's not something i'd want to have happen to me, but it's also not something i've experienced or ever worried about. i do always carry a small tool in my bag though just in case.

I'd wager that lockered screws are secure enough; I'm only saying that pinned is more secure...part of the UL backpacking ethos is to balance two opposites: "Gear as light as possible that is as sturdy as possible." We try to elimiate anything with screw construction. I've never had screws back out on the trail because--I don't carry anything constructed with screws! (not even my stove.) Most UL'ers would not carry a Leatherman or other multitool due to weight. Since I'm a knife guy, I splurge on a "heavy" 3 oz Manix; that's my comfort item. Some UL'ers only carry a razor blade. The weightless pursuit can get rather extreme (eg, I'm now sleeping in a gossamer bivy that weighs less than a pound and packs to the size of a soda can) and at some point it's not entirely rational! This is known and admitted. We even have a name for going too far: "Stupid Light." That's pursuing lightness to the point your gear fails or you are miserable.

thanks. i get it. i just never heard of this no screw thing before. to me, the m2lw was almost perfect and is not more perfect with screws, but i'm not a ul backpacker. most of you guys would think i was an idiot for what i carry. half the time, i'm carrying a kid, so i've had to give up on ul for the last 15 years.

Off topic, (apologies) but a correction is in order. I just remembered I DO carry something with screw construction: Hiking poles with cam locks. You adjust the tightness of the cam lock with a nut. And, they are often coming loose and requiring re-tightening; and, you frequently hear BPers complain about losing their nuts (giggle) and thereby the use of a trekking pole. But seriously, nuts on poles are a problem.
At any rate, may I extend Mr. Ladybug a formal invitation to try UL backpacking? It's so miserable, it's fun! A good introduction can be had by following Andrew Skurka's blog. Pick your lightest knife, take leave of your senses, and join the fun!

honestly, if i could only take one knife hiking and i was worried about weight, it would probably be a mora.
i do like to go light for some things. i made my own hammock that i take with me for sleeping. i plan on making my own tarp as well, but haven't had a chance to get it done yet. it's not ultralight, but it's lighter than a standard tent. i don't like sleeping on the ground though, so even those ul tents or tarp setups wouldn't be my choice. i'm sure my version of ul would probably be about 20lbs before food and water.
