Matriarch 2 trainer

#1

Post by T-1000 »

Using my endura trainer the past few months has really opened my eyes to the genius of the design and what it's capable of, all the nuances of the grip, blade, lock etc. I can really appreciate the thought that went into such a seemingly humble blade design, especially for a SD situation and that type of training. I recently picked up a matriarch 2 and figure I need a trainer to go with it for the same purpose. Anyone know if there are any out there? Or a trainer blade that can be swapped into the endura handle? Seems like for such a purpose driven knife the thought has surely crossed Mr. Sals mind at some point, especially with Mr. Janich on the team. Thanks.

i think a trainer would push me over the edge to finally get a matriarch. i'd still prefer a matriarch salt over the vg10 though.

Keen Edge Knives ( https://www.keenedgeknives.com ) makes a non-folding aluminum trainer for the Matriarch 2. Seems like production is currently backed up, but you might want to give them a shot.

A salt version would be a must buy, but then again I'd love a salt version of every spyderco I own.

Nice! Thanks for that. Will give them a shot. Would love a spyderco folding trainer one day but this is a good stand in until then.

Dear T-1000:

I commissioned the Matriarch trainers from Keen Edge a number of years ago when the Matriarch 2 was the official swag knife for my Martial Blade Camp event. Steve Rollert did an absolutely amazing job on them, but bear in mind that the unique shape and dynamics of the Reverse "S" profile shine through--even in the trainer. While most trainers "slide" to simulate cutting motions, the Matriarch 2 trainer "bites" significantly more. It's still the best currently available for the job, though.

Stay safe,

Mike

For those looking for the link Michael mentions above. I don't see the Matriarch trainer, so you may need to call or email.

Mike,

Thank you for the input sir. The factors you mentioned are exactly why I feel the need for a trainer specific to the s curve, for specificity of training. Now that I know you actually commissioned the keen edge trainers I will 100% pick one up. Can you tell me if there any of your training videos floating around out there specific to this blade style?

It's on there. You have navigate through the "trainers tab" then go to "all products" and I believe it's on the second page.

So it is, thank you. Like many men, I cannot see what is directly in front of me. My wife will confirm. :spiral-eyes

Hi T-1000,

I'll watch the thread and see if I can gauge demand?

Thank you sir. I feel like anyone that buys and carries such a purpose driven blade with such a unique design would at least buy one.

Dear T-1000:

I don't have any training materials specific to Reverse "S" blades. Since Martial Blade Concepts is primarily cut focused, however, most of my tactics work very will with the Matriarch 2. The tactics MBC does do that include thrusts can be easily adapted to work around the lack of a penetrating point.

Stay safe,

Mike

Thanks for the input Mike, I appreciate and will consider that when I start training with it.

The funny thing is that the Civilian was designed and made for undercover federal agents to slash their way out of a life or death situation . Designed to be used by people who have no formal knife training with gross motorskills. The Matriarch was the cheaper version for South African women. Designing a trainer for and instinctive slashing blade seems weird. That doesn't mean i also don't have a trainer for my civilian but even then the trainer, as michael mentioned, is not a pleasant thing to train with (the sharp point especially). But making a trainer for a knife designed for untrained self defense seems funny.

you shouldn't have to train to sprint away from a bad situation, but regular running still helps.

Yeah I've read the product descriptions in the catalog as well. Handguns are used for self defense, does it seem funny to train with handguns if you carry one? Or does it seem logical to train with something you intend to carry strictly for self defense, as a firearm backup. Do you think just carrying a weapon is going to do any good if the time comes to use it? The point of the trainer is to get the most out of it and learn how to manipulate it effectively since the blade shape is so radically different. The knife may be adequate for untrained self defense but think if you actually do train with it. And not sure where anyone would get the idea that undercover cops are "untrained," because they are some of the hardest guys out there who have much more specialized training than your typical uniform Patrol. I'm certainly not worried about the " unpleasantness " of using the trainer. Besides, knife training is fun and I enjoy it so, yeah.

Hi T-1000,

We've got a drawing in process and I'll have a hand made prototype in a few weeks. Some training with anything is better for performance than no training.
