The thinnest above 3inches

#1

Post by Netherend »

I recently purchased a Delica and I am really enjoying how the thin blade cuts through objects with ease. It has really made me re-examine blade thickness for EDC tasks. I want to try some other thin spyderco blades. I read that the chaparral is thin and it’s on my wish list, but I am curious to know if spyderco has longer thin blades.

What is the thinnest blade that spyderco produces that is longer than 3inches?

I think depending on which you prioritize (length vs thickness) maybe the longest/thinnest is the Centofante 3 which is 0.5mm thinner than a Delica at 2mm and around half an inch longer in edge length at 3 inches.

There are longer blades that are reasonably thin and cut well (Police 4) but I don't know of anything longer than a Centofante 3 in the 2mm range unless you look at small kitchen knives.

I think Evil D is right on the money with the Centofante 3.

Police 4 gets you 4 inches of blade at 3mm, and with the distal taper it gets even thinner toward the tip.

+1 on the Centofante 3. I always have at least one in my quiver, and I've gifted two or three more over the years. It doesn't get near the attention that it should. Way past time for a sprint run or two for the C3 (and C4!) in some updated steels.

The Endura, like the Delica, is thin for its length (3.75").

the catcherman.

I always forget about the Catcherman since it's been discontinued so long but it has to be the longest/thinnest folder Spyderco has ever produced. 1.8mm at 4.3 inches of edge length.

Noting that every knife mentioned is well loved by users including the discontinued or underrated ones like the Catcherman and Centofante.
Really think some updates to those models are due, although the Centofante 3/4 is probably only held back by pinned construction. While I like both, I prefer the Centofante 3/4 to the Delica 4 in every way (both blade shapes).
Of course, I’m looking forward to the new gen thinner geometry delica on the horizon too…

Though my main point is that it’s clear there is demand for more longer bladed knives with thinner blades and geometry! Spyderco already makes some good ones that get thin, like the Police, Endura, native chief, etc., but we can go thinner by taking advantage of the proper steels and stuff that can handle such geometry.

I'll recommend the Centofante regardless of preference simply because it's a great folder. But I'll look through the collection tonight in case I'm overlooking another candidate :)

Maybe the Caly 3.5? Not certain, because I don’t have one.

Yes, the Endura is pretty thin, but only the FFG version. The saber ground version cancels out any benefits of the relatively thin blade stock, in terms of slicing performance.

*Edit to add: The Caribbean is fairly thin, too; at or nearly at the thinness of the FFG Endura.

I will check out the Centofante. It also helps that the price on the Centofante is not bad. Thanks!
