i think the best collectibles would be prototypes of knives that never made it to full production. there's got to be a ton of one-offs in sal's and eric's collection that we've never seen for one reason or another, but that are perfectly good knives.
The Cranberry Lum is exactly that. I think there are two examples of the prototype out in the wild.

When I think of ultra-rare, I think of this first concept knife that Sal made (using a Buck knife, if I remember correctly). There is only this one in existence and obviously it will never be sold. Was an awesome experience just being able to hold it a few years ago. A neat piece of Spyderco history for sure!

As a collector there is always a grail.

As a user it’s any Spyderco when you don’t have a knife on you….

I missed that part of your original post :grin-sweat

My personal grail at the moment is the Fradon 4V Manix 2. I've seen a few pop up on "the bay" from time to time, but I either miss them or people want more than I'm willing to spend.

Having recently acquired a micarta Wayne Goddard, an early Harpy, and a SuperHawk, I have no grail, apart from a new or old Spydie model I don’t yet know I want.

You have great taste my friend! I am a enormous Manix fan. I have 20 of them amongst them 4 lockbacks namely 2 mini manixes and 2 Original full size Manixes 1 of them the first and only sprint originals.
Also 3 Manix 2 sprints but i have none of the Exclusive’s since i have almost no acces to them and if they come in my area it is cheaper for me to get a normal run and buy expensive scales then to pick one exclusive up. :woozy
I do wish my poll gets enough attention so that spyderco finally gives the Manix 2 XL a nice sprint run or heck it may even be another full production run aslong as its gets some love its desperately needs. If such a manix would come out it will definitely also be a grail of mine! :beaming-face

The proto that Sal made, was using an all stainless model by Basic Tools, a 440C folder made in Japan.
I have three other BT knives, but my one that looked just like the one Sal used, was stolen when I came to NZ.

BTW, Basic Tools made three different sizes of the all stainless model, the two smaller ones I gave away to friends when I left South Africa.
BT was big in RSA, as they were low cost, but now they are collectors items.

I recently was lucky enough to get my grail, nothing super rare, unique, just something searched for a long time, and finally found.

One I’ve been hunting for quite some time now is the OKCA Goddard club knife with wood inlay Beaver on the handle. Proving to be quite difficult to get ahold of.

Some day I’d like to replace my very first Spyderco knife which was a Police, the one that said POLICE MODEL on the blade. Or in lieu any ss model with the same blade grind, ie not flat ground.

Watching it now.

Maybe the seller is a bit optimistic on the price. Hard to say since I can't find any completed auctions for a C76
